Fantastic write up! So many great ideas to think about and explore. I loved your insight that edible packaging doesn't make the safety role of packaging go away. Agree that the Sabra insight was brilliant, and is valuable design pattern for future inspiration. It reminds me of the classic story of hot dogs and hot dog buns being out of step in packaging counts, one with 10 per package and the other with 8... Sabra thought through the entire user experience. I really like the depth of your analysis and the wholistic picture.
These days I use Pentel Energel pen most of the time. It's silky smoothe and never skips, even on notebooks that seem to have a glossy finish that makes other pens skip. If you created a refillable Pentel Energel I would become a loyal customer.
This is very interesting. A good example of where we have lost ground compared to earlier ages. Raises good question of why not refillable. Could we return to a refillable model? But maybe based on a cheaper pen so it wouldn't be personal tragedy if you lost it? Or could there be a 100% recyclable pen in the spirit of Bill McDonough's cradle-to-cradle?
