Andrew commented on Slum Radio – Educating Parents [Updated 6th Jan 2015]

Hi Laura,

1. Do you know how you will measure the impact of the radio shows?
SR station volunteers will conduct bi-weekly monitoring and structured interviews on increase knowledge and behaviors among caregivers and parents of under 5. The project will also link up with local hospitals and health centers and evaluate health data (growth rate, episodes of illnesses etc.) of families with under 5 children and compare the data with the initial KAP survey (baseline) results to measure the impact.

2. Are you looking for a specific decrease in diarrhea and ARI over X amount of time?
The idea behind SR station project is to bridge the gap between CHWs / health officials and Parents of U5 in slum areas by bringing them together to a common platform to improve the quality of health service and build trust among each other.

We will measure our impact using two indicators;
a. We will closely monitor and test the knowledge levels of U5 Parents in slums using participatory approaches and real time emergency simulation exercises.
b. Compare the health statistics mainly decrease in Diarrhea/ ARI cases.

Once both the indicators shows good results - we will propose an exit strategy.

3. How long will you keep one show going before deciding to potentially adjust strategy to reach more people & increase it's effectiveness?

As explained above, SR station programs will be designed based on initial findings of KAP survey and will be aired for a month initially. Later, SR station volunteers will regularly interact with Parents/caregivers and govt. CHWs/ MO's to evaluate the impact of health messaging and street plays to reach more people effectively.

Hope it help's
