I am President and Founding Partner of Digital Mentor Group Inc. For 28 years, we specialized in designing, building, and deploying on the job training for manufacturing, service, and processing organizations. I also serve as Vice President - Productivity Mentoring, for Innovation Canada.
I am interested in being involved in this project. Thanks, Kate Rushton for including me on this list and thinking that I could make a meaningful addition to this important project. Mentoring and a BOD are excellent methods to help develop the skills, knowledge, behaviors, and strategies to help prepare people for their future.
I have submitted a skilled trades proposal, titled "Every Buddy A Trainer" Learning System for Any Person, Task, Language, or Skill, in the (2) Vocational Training & Entrepreneurship section of openIDEO. There may be some things there that would apply to your proposal, especially equipping mentors with skills necessary to transfer their skills, knowledge, and experience to youth. We are looking for partners, as well.

As I see it, there are several scenarios where this learning transfer system would work, based on the following characteristics: 1. Many refugees had either skills, gainful employment, education, trades backgrounds, or unpaid work, before they became refugees. Each of these individuals could benefit from sharing their expertise with others. While Every Buddy A Trainer may need adapting for an education setting, a classroom is not required to conduct informal training for a skills or processing task. 2. There are also opportunities to build pride, engagement, and purpose for those who choose to take on the responsibility to develop others. I have seen people 'rise to the occasion' as they took on training tasks. There is a certain amount of pride and a sense of purpose that someone who is recognized as willing to share his or her expertise. 3. Every Buddy A Trainer is designed for ad hoc, informal situations, where learning, skills, and knowledge transfer is required. Because the system works best where the task follows a process, such as making, operating or repair something, such as a bicycle, a solar cooker, or in a service role, such as selling at a market stand, or helping a customer with a purchase.
Developing Country Adaptation
In terms of adapting Every Buddy A Trainer to developing countries, Mary-Helen Immordino-Yang, of the Rossier School of Education, at the University of Southern California (USC), has been doing some incredible work on how cultural differences affect learning. While her work is more targeted at education, there are informal elements of education in task-based training. I have taken learning styles into account, as all three generally known learning styles are represented in the process, there may be a need to adapt the process to include cultural differences, alongside learning styles. I will be contacting Immordino-Yang, to determine if, and how, Every Buddy A Trainer might be further adapted to meet the needs of the target audience. I am trusting that she will become a supporter of this concept.
