Great point Annie. I will dig deeper to explore nontraditional youth-senior programs.

The more I reflect on this experience, the more I realize how much I got out of it vs the person I was helping.

A lot of our actions are taken without much, if any, conscious thought. The lady I was "helping", and even this forum, demonstrated how much impact the subject line has. Although only a few lines of text, the subject line frames the interaction and can be the underlying cause of happiness or frustration.

Mentorships doesn't have to be a one-way transaction. The high-level question is, "how do we encourage the youth to support older adults through mentorship?" I wonder if instead we ask, "how can we encourage adult mentors to reflect on their interactions with youth?" This might allow us to take existing programs and extract value that has been locked up.

Great insights. M of S sounds like a very cool organization with a powerful mission.

Always felt, as a generation focused on new technologies, we don't value the knowledge seniors have. However, the stream of knowledge can flow both ways and opening the gates at one end will allow for knowledge to flow both ways.
