Hi, I think you make some great points here. I thought I'd chip in an article that talks about motivating people to be altruistic, it provides some interesting, and perhaps slightly provocative views. He talks about not making the altruistic aspect of the product/action the main motivation, but focusing on other motivating factors that take less reasoning - so in this survey, we get more community involvement as a result of students trying to improve their resume. It's a little of the "what's in it for me" attitude and I think looking how we extend the value gained from being involved is an interesting approach, and I wonder whether it's best to appeal to self interest or altruism, or try to lead one into the other.
