Hi, I think you make some great points here. I thought I'd chip in an article that talks about motivating people to be altruistic, it provides some interesting, and perhaps slightly provocative views. It's a piece written Rory Sutherland is vice-chairman of Ogilvy Group UK from a recent issue of Wired magazine. http://www.wired.co.uk/magazine/archive/2014/02/features/just-do-it-for-status/viewall

He talks about not making the altruistic aspect of the product/action the main motivation, but focusing on other motivating factors that take less reasoning - so in this survey, we get more community involvement as a result of students trying to improve their resume. It's a little of the "what's in it for me" attitude and I think looking how we extend the value gained from being involved is an interesting approach, and I wonder whether it's best to appeal to self interest or altruism, or try to lead one into the other.
