Thanks, Josefina, for this idea! I agree that there is huge potential for solar energy in schools. Are you familiar at all with the New York Power Authority's (NYPA) K-Solar Program? http://www.nypa.gov/k-solar/

Holly commented on Energy Access in Urban Areas

Hi Amanda,

Glad to hear you're interested in this program. A few projects that have been implemented so far are:

- ~1.4million households in slums across Brazil have received safe electricity connections through a partnership with AES Eletropaulo. Secure connections also help reduce electricity theft.

- In India, Shelter Associates has promoted dialogue between local governments to promote energy access through community outreach and geographic information system (GIS) technology.

- Kenya Power extended credit to low-income customers and implemented programs such as pre-paid meters and outdoor connections in order to increase electricity connections.

A few recurring issues across these regions include:

- Lack of trust between residents and utilities

- Frequent fires caused by unsafe electricity connections

- Electricity theft/illegal connectsion
