MASS Design Group commented on Preventing Illness Through Improved Flooring

What an excellent idea, and example of the impact that simple infrastructural solutions can have. In our work MASS has seen that applying concrete floors improves health, and in the process can empower families, especially mothers, to gain control over the cleanliness of the environment they provide their children.

Is ARCHIVE looking to work with the government of Bangladesh, both to scale and finance the project as well as to turn it into a public awareness campaign? Would there be value in getting the word out on the health impact of pouring concrete? If incremental housing upgrades are a common practice in Bangladesh, as they are in many urban areas of South Asia, it would be interesting to establish whether cost or awareness is the most significant barrier, and to approach the issue accordingly.

MASS Design Group commented on Rapid-Access Care Centers for Child Survival - Muso + MASS Design Group

Guy, thanks for those suggestions and questions, and Ari for so effectively laying out the data behind this project.

MASS brings a community-based design approach to health care impact, stemming from a series of successful interventions in East Africa. For example, in Burera, Rwanda, following the opening of the Butaro District Hospital, we saw a 65% decrease in maternal mortality in the region.

We have continually refined a model of deep engagement with community challenges and priorities, coupled with the input of a dedicated research team to produce innovative built solutions. MASS and Muso will engage with the existing Malian health systems and structures, and consult closely with the Ministry of Health and experts, end users, and other key stakeholders. This will enable us to develop responsive local solutions and ensure community buy-in.

Meena, thanks for your input and guidance. We’re excited to be connecting through the platform, and will move on to explore ideas for specific interventions in the next phase.
