"Power to the Street Eater!"
After several years of working in community development, food systems, and sustainable travel, I realized my passion. Street food! There is no better way to discover a country than one delicious bite at a time. In every market, there is at least one woman selling something her clients just can't get enough of, she's what we call a Market Mama.
Here's the rub, women all over the world sell ready-to-eat meals, and while tasty, this food may not always be nutritionally complete, nor prepared in hygienic conditions. As much as I love street food, I hate diarrhea.
At MamaCarts, we believe that access to healthy food is a right, not a privilege. And we want to contribute to making access a reality for every individual living in the communities in which we work.
MamaCarts is a food cart franchise that increases access to nutritiously complete and clean meals via direct sales and a certification program. We leveraging existing resources to improve working conditions for street food vendors and empower consumers with better meal options.
With financial support from the Rockefeller Foundation's Centennial Innovation Challenge, we launched a pilot in Benin, West Africa in 2014 and are continuously working towards the next iteration. Hope to hear from you and glad to be part of the OpenIDEO community.
A mobile street food delivery service that improves the hygiene and quality of street food for consumers in Benin, while also providing a consistent livelihood and certification program for vendors.
