Elyse commented on Using Soccer to Improve Literacy

Ross -

Congratulations on your idea making it to the Refinement phase. As a life-long athlete, I strongly believe in the power of sport to enhance youth confidence and motivation for learning. I love RTP's approach to connect play with learning to not only build literacy skills, but also focus on the positive experience of learning with a team!

Would you please share more information about how RTP connects its sports/activities to literacy programs? What games/sports do you plan to focus on? Do you focus on traditional games that are popular in a certain region and youth are already familiar with?

I really appreciate the Impact Page on RTP's website (http://www.righttoplay.com/Learn/ourimpact/Pages/default.aspx) - is there more info on how the student experience on the playground/sportsfield translates to literacy learning in the classroom?

Congratulations again!

Nyko, yeah I've only recently learned of this too. Google has a new(ish) department - Access and Energy - that is exploring innovative ways to bring Internet and renewable energy to new and existing markets. Here's at least one article to learn more: http://arstechnica.com/business/2014/06/google-formalizes-commitment-to-access-and-energy-with-new-division/

This plus O-Power = great example of focusing on translating benefits of energy conservation/renewable energy sources in easy ways for people to understand. (O-Power: see post https://openideo.com/challenge/renewable-energy/research/it-s-not-just-a-question-of-price-using-social-norms-to-foster-energy-conservation)
