SMS has been quite successful in inexpensively spreading information in developing countries, for example giving farmers updated information on grain prices. Combining this usage with an alert system sent directly to phones (like Amber Alerts in the US) could rapidly educate local people on the location of outbreaks, tips on how to safely handle patients, and contact information to notify healthcare workers.

Great idea Mikel. Ron Finley is bringing attention to this in low-income communities in Los Angeles where food deserts mean that kids don't usually see fresh fruits and vegetables. He's found that kids eat food - even vegetables! - that they have cultivated themselves and other researchers have shown that as adults, we eat the foods we grew up eating early in life. Plus, it teaches responsibility and patience.
