Juhi Gupta commented on A Ready Workforce

Hi Joyce,

Your idea is simple, logical and very practical to make a change at the grass root level. The solution to solve these challenges on a long term basis will be investment in infrastructure for formal education and training but your idea can complement such efforts and fill the gap that currently exists.

In order for this idea to be successful, it is important to work/partner with various government organizations and corporate organizations who would be interested in developing local market talent for certain sectors. My personal experience in Africa something related to this is when I was working on a project for a client who was investing in large chemical manufacturing projects in Mozambique. One of the objective of the project was to provide long term employment in the local region. However, the local labor pool did not had technical skills that was required for construction as well as for long term employment in the plant. The client ultimately had to import foreign labor which made the project costly than initially estimated. The client had to partner with local colleges/universities to provide necessary education and training programs to make the local youth employable on a long term basis.

One potential option is to first identify the opportunities that would be available in short term in your region and the skill sets required. The skill sets could also be identified together with the partners – government, corporate organizations, small scale entrepreneurs etc. Once the skill sets required for employability are identified, then training programs could be developed and implemented. Initially, these should be geared towards sectors where investors might be interested in investing in the region, for example, some East African countries have advantages over other regions for low cost natural resources. Once launched and working, then gradually broaden the efforts to focus on developing the skill sets required for other sectors.

Any idea to be successful to make a positive impact in the society has to be broad and long term in nature.

Kind regards,
Juhi
