Kinneret commented on GeneNeer – Engineering a Safer Future

Good point and great question, thanks!

Contamination of soil can occur from different sources. Be it from a plant (transgenic or non-transgenic), a neighboring field or contaminated soil, water (e.g. acid rains), insects, bacteria, and generally speaking anything that is added to a field.

There are many solutions to retain soil quality. Physical solutions to hedge the soil from any environmental perturbation or other creative solutions.

GeneNeer’s solution is one of the latter. By adding a genetic lock, tailored to any specific gene, and giving the keys to the farmers hands, we enable high control on the place and time for expression of any gene. This includes genes that may affect soil. We allow the farmer to limit the expression of any gene to one’s own field and not spread to neighbors.
