This is an interesting circumstance of WTO rules conflicting with larger G20 goals to phase out fossil fuel subsides. I think it is important to note though that the WTO is a dispute settling mechanism, not a courtroom. The preferred solution is for the countries concerned to discuss their problems and settle the dispute by themselves. It seems in this instance - after the Appellate Body Report - Canada and Japan likely did just that and given the strong push in the G20 to decrease the world's dependence on fossil fuel, I can only be hopeful these countries come to resolutions that had this larger goal in mind.

Very interesting read. Thank you for sharing.
