Mahmud commented on Farmers Market

Yes Diego financing is always issue for the group of low income people, due to lack of visions of the farmer which is reality at least in Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Access to finance is the vital component to design the program. And thanks for idea of family farming because the ideas reflects the efficient productivity for the farmers. In Bangladesh we call it contract farming/contract grower. It is basically farmers every season has specific contract with the buyer with specific type of crops with a specific type of crops, so the farmers get right price of their crop. But in this case the farmers should have adequate land for farming. But Bangladesh is high density populated country. Land is very scarce and farmers used to farm on their homestead garden places. Moreover the literacy rate is very low among this group so the farmers need to participate in the market where the marginalize people and business people dose trade. So country like Bangladesh most of the farmers are marginalized farmers and many of them work in the rented small land and also in a very remote places then urban market. So the middle man took the advantages of their production and they gain the maximum profit out of it. Integrated farming by the house hold can help them to produce more and sell it in consume it for their better livelihoods. But however it requires involving the private sector for a business partnership formation and also customizes the micro credit operators in the farmers market. Almost every village has specific physical market where the farmers has the access but due to strong hold of the middle man of the market the farmers lose the benefit, where the suggestion of the Lauren was very thoughtful and that arrangement could motivate the farmers participate more effectively.

Lauren, Thanks again, Government of Bangladesh has lots of initiative to develop agriculture sector along with many other issues. Lots of development organizations are also working here for a long time, so the government has the policy and management team to channelize the fund and maintain properly. In many cases as the government does not have the human resources so it is a bilateral agreement that the home country service organization will implement with collaboration with government concerned department and ministry. On the other hand we have Local government development authority they have their existence all over the country to supervise the work. But in many cases Local NGO with partnership with the INGO implementing such activities. For example if you go to our website http://www.nishorgo.org this is the project website and the prime contractor is IRG http://www.irgltd.com implementing this program through local NGO and partnership with Government. It is project for Ministry of Environment and Forest of Bangladesh Government funded by the USAID. And In many case we are also receiving fund as Public private partnership and creating win-win business relation keeping the ultimate goal is community empowerment. Laure feel free if you need any more information

We tryout with this concept with rural sales program. It is a rural base sales people identified and linked with the private sector the market their product in the village level. And there are hubs in each of the village we appointed hub manager who store the product and the village women are the sales agent and they get the commission out of it. Like small pack of soap, small pack of shampoo small pack of food item to sell it to the villagers. It works tremendously.
In our project IPAC (http://www.nishorgo.org) we are also implementing similar approach supporting the poor rural natural resources dependent community people support them with inputs and training and linked them with market. It is now implementing stage. We have village base 30 HHs (a group) working for smililar type of agriculture and fish culture of their home stead land and support them with technology and input and capacity building. They are in the phase of production. Now we are steping in to the upprt market to ensure the price that they are producing.
