Visual Arts Officer
Kent County Council
"I am an artist, currently working in a local government arts service, with a background in management consultancy."
I believe in the power of great art to improve lives, for its own sake, but also for the impact of culture led regeneration in economic and social terms. I currently work with a small team to enable the county of Kent, UK, to become a leading cultural centre, with my particular focus on Visual Arts; delivering key projects, developing collaborative relationships with important partners, advising and supporting artists and artist led organisations, and advocating for the transformative power of the arts. I unlock potential, build relationships, uncover local ideas and grow leadership within communities.
In a previous life I was a management consultant with an international consultancy developing systems for financial services. I view art and technology as vital tools to improve communication and education within communities and empower them to make the changes they need, to give them the encouragement and support to make a change themselves, and to break down barriers that can lead to conflict.
I don’t believe we have yet come close to fully exploiting the power of technology as a means of communication and education. Similarly I think we are only just realising the potential of the artist to help speak with communities and the strength of the socially engaged artist’s mind when turned to creative problem solving.
When I get down time I am an artist with a keen eye for design and aesthetic and a belief in the power of visual language to engage. Much of my artwork is informed by looking for correlations between structures seen on the web, in society, in bioscience, and interpersonally. (Samples of my work and my artist statement can be viewed at http://www.duncanbrannan.com/). My interest in technology is how it can be used creatively to communicate, whilst my artwork is informed by the philosophies that these technologies are grounded within.
I hope that in some small way I will make a difference with what I do, and welcome opportunities to have conversations that may lead to developing solutions to a variety of issues.
