Great question. Actually bat houses are something that a lot of critter removal companies recommend to help ensure that once bats are removed from your attic that they have a nearby home to go to instead -- otherwise they may just try to find a new hole in your house to roost in.

Thanks for the kind words! The campaign itself will be an education point by reaching a large audience and demonstrating that bats are friends not foes. Then, each BatBnB unit sold will come with an educational brochure for families and kids to read and learn all about bats and how amazing they are.
We also plan to offer a 'perk' in our campaign where a backer can choose to purchase two BatBnB units. One for themselves, and the other to be donated to a local park or community of their choosing. Each of the park models will come with an educational plaque (different from the one in photos above) to help educate all the park visitors on bats and how to contribute to the conservation effort.
The final educational aspect will come from our partnership with a conservation group which allows consumers the option to get more involved in conservation efforts.
In regards to your last question, we came up with the idea and probably started sketching designs in September of 2016.
Thanks for your positive feedback! The way we interpret the brief on peace & planet is to find solutions that benefit communities and planet (wildlife) through cooperation and co-existence. The peace we are empowering is the peace between humans and a historically vilified animal. Through education, our product helps bridge the gap between these animals and communities so that they can cooperate (safe housing in exchange for pest control) and co-exist in a mutually beneficial way.
While the immediate impact is to support bats and reduce pests (including disease-carrying mosquitos), we hope that one of the additional benefits is that through the product-assembly experience (IKEA Effect) families can educate younger kids to think critically about their relationships with animals and nature.
It may not be spot on for what the challenge is digging for -- but we love to share with the OpenIDEO community nonetheless!
