"HCI researcher and speech scientist who is passionate about applications of technology for good!"
I am Director of the dual-degree MHCI program at the Madeira-Interactive Technologies Institute (Madeira-ITI) and an Invited Assistant Professor at the University of Madeira. I am also a Pronunciation Editor for the Oxford English Dictionary Online, as well as a speech scientist who specializes in language modeling and the development of adaptive speech interfaces. I am interested in leveraging speech technologies through mobile telephony as part of the Speech and Language Technologies for Development (SLT4D) initiative. I am also interested in sentiment analysis and am currently working on a mobile service application for empowering individuals to become stakeholders and citizen surveyors in the planning, shaping, and development of their cities and towns through the association of users' affective responses with geo-tagged features of the urban environment.
I have worked for Microsoft (Lisbon), the Catholic University of Lisbon, the Centre for Speech Technology Research (Edinburgh), Rocket Gaming Systems (Vancouver), and the University of Colorado (Boulder). I received my PhD from the Department of Computer Science at University College Dublin and I am an alum of Media Lab Europe.
