I like Rebecca's suggestion very much as an additional option. Unfortunately, to Jamie's question, I have no means to prototype either idea, nor any technical expertise. I was hoping someone with engineering background might be able to take it and run with it.

I'm thinking it would have to always be an affirmatively activated feature as opposed to having an automatic setting as I initially described it. Partly to avoid accidental activation while the light is pointed at one's own face/eyes, or when nearby children, seated persons, etc. So the activator should prevent accidental activation by requiring more than just a push button, perhaps a twist-and-push button, or a double or triple tap to activate?
