Amy commented on Ever the hopeful, ever the optimist

I think it's important to let young people know that you don't have to figure everything out right away (there's no pressure!), and that the first job you land might not be the one you want but one that will give you that real world experience. It's never too late to switch careers or pursue other interests; you build on what you have as you go along.

I always kind of wished there was more of that in college--"real world" interaction. In my graduate program, we're required to do a practicum that allows us to put our theories to practice and give us exposure to our particular field of interest. I also had a very similar program at my high school (and found myself falling back on those high school skills rather than college when I was working full-time!). It was in college that something was lost in translation, and I think it would be great if more colleges (and high schools, too!) incorporated practicums or internships into the curriculum. It would help open doors for students, provide them with hands-on experience as well as different perspectives and skills, and help bridge that gap between the academic bubble and the real world. In addition, it also allows schools to become a better resource for job searching and general career advice.
