While reCAPTCHA is preventing bots that pretend to be you and hack into databases, you are actually helping to digitize books. According to Luis von Ahn, about 100 million words are digitized daily which is the equivalent of approximately two and a half million books in a year. After successfully reinventing CAPTCHA, he came up with another question: How can we get 100 million people translating the Web into every major language for free? The result: Duolingo. A website (also available as an app) that allows people to learn a new language for free while simultaneously translating the Web.
I believe that this "fair business model" and massive-scale online collaboration made possible with the power of the internet will form an important basis for the design solution. But first, we need to ask better questions.
