Kristen commented on Economic Empowerment through Self Employment... and Jobs?

Thanks for the link + more info, Meena!

“It is the only way India can make a big leap forward in spreading banking services to hundreds of millions of people. The banks have been trying to do it for ages, but at their current pace, it will take years and years before everyone has a bank account.”

The article I referenced also talks about the value of the data that banks and credit providers would gain from offering no-cost mobile banking services.
Hopefully, there is an expanding trend where more businesses and the financial sector see value in investing in social causes. :)

Recently, I have also read a lot about M-Pesa, a mobile money platform. Access to this type of micro-savings is more widespread than micro-lending (by 5-10x in regions of Africa) and is accompanied by a lot of positive data on women's participation in such technology.

Hi Brandie!

I apologize for my delayed response! I'm moving at the moment, and have not been totally on-the-grid.

It was a great discussion, and although the project is new, they are definitely using data from the World Bank, IMF, UN Millennium Development project, and data collected in collaboration with the 1995 Platform for Action (http://www.un.org/womenwatch/daw/beijing/platform/).

These data touch many aspects of women's progress over the last 20 years, and safety is a metric that each of these institutes has data on.

Chelsea Clinton spoke to the accessibility of data compiled through this collaboration, but having looked myself, there doesn't appear to be an accessible resource right now. I'll definitely keep an eye on it though! I'm following everything I can, being particularly inspired by Melinda Gates. :)
