Sadly as we all know, in the west there is a huge food waste problem as well. I think encouraging supermarkets to sell more of the food that today is wasted, would be a start. A chain like Walmart could then promise to donate a bag of rice for every kg of the previously "food waste" sold.

Ie. a pack of cucumbers that none buys cause they're spotted or crooked is sold anyway and Walmart donates a bag of rice. Walmart sells more, less food waste, more charity. Win Win.

This would of course require something of people's perception of "food waste". Something that is definitely possible:
