Hi Sarah, I love this idea: there's not enough mystery in the world :) My thoughts:
I think the level of information you allow could make a big difference in uptake/ attendance. My idea: Add a "difficulty rating" to the event. There is a local hiking program where I live and their ratings of "very difficult" and "easy" have helped my friends and I choose what we'd like to attend.
I also think you could build a lot of enthusiasm and engagement/ interest by offering 3 hints as the day of the event approaches. Hints can stir conversations on your social media sites and also you can use a Facebook whisper code ( some phrase a member would whisper at a physical retail location) to push your participants towards something like a health food store/ restaurant (read: Sponsor) where they can grab an extra hint. Ex. Hint: "Get ready for Hills!'
I'd like to add to this idea: Add a "difficulty rating" to the surprise event. There is a local hiking program where I live and their ratings of "very difficult" and "easy" have helped my friends and I choose what we'd like to attend.
