OK, Candy Chang is a force to be reckoned with. She and her partner at Civic Center is Louisiana are doing the most engaging, moving and unique civic-minded community changing installations and concepts I have ever seen. I urge you to take a look!

Pittsburgh, like many rust-belt cities, is looking at a dismal fate for many of it's historic neighborhoods. For decades, as industrial jobs vanish and people move away, these neighborhoods have been facing demise. It's time to change all that.

Lindsay I can't agree more. I think that preservation of our natural and built environment is really key to reducing waste and recycling scarce materials while at the same time creating a sense of place. People gather around shared experiences and memories and I think that we should stop and realize what great opportunities we have for building our communities back up.

what an interesting article--the area of Waterloo, ON is just like Santa Clara County, CA 100 years ago when Leland Stanford started his University :)

wow that is great! I had no idea this was already sort of going on! I really love the idea of getting people in a community to put the work in and not just having outsiders come in and tell them what's wrong and how to fix it. The community needs to find self-efficacy and self-sufficiency. they can only do this when they come together to find solutions and target problems. Outsiders can't always see all the players and all the pieces.
