Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Hawai‘i (HMHB) was initially established as a statewide steering committee and became a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization in 1992. We are a local nonprofit agency that is part of a national network of organizations and individuals committed to improving Hawaii’s maternal, child and family health through collaborative efforts in public education, advocacy, and partner development.
Thank you Victoria Perroni for asking! We appreciate the kind words. The problem of sleep-related infant mortality is huge and largely unknown by people outside of maternal & infant public health. It's an insidious problem, as the deaths don't make the news, yet they're happening every day, and (with some exceptions) they are usually preventable through education.
Our project launched in January 2013 and we have successfully acquired grant funding to continue the program until now. However, we are also now looking at the possibility of corporate sponsors and/or the potential to bill Medicaid for preventative health services to help sustain funding. The program is popular, and very impactful, but costly to operate, so we are very open to partnerships and ideas.
