The insights from your interview are true but aren't ever really focused on. Most people might think there's no problem of misaligned values once they work for a company that have similar values as them. However, your interview emphasized that those values may change over time which affects all of the employees in that organization. For employees to appreciate the contribution of other employees then they must first support their organization's mission and values.
Great contribution! My own experience with working at a startup has demonstrated that the relationship between employees is crucial to the success of the company. In some ways it's easier to express gratitude with a smaller team because everyone is invested into the success of the same idea which builds loyalty between employees. It's easier to identify people's contributions to projects which makes it normal to express gratitude those individuals.
