"Design in unsusual places"
Design is entering a new phase where the whole experience is designed, rather than just a singular product. I spent the last few years completing a Masters in Industrial Design and a Bachelors in Film and Communications before that. Somewhere in the middle of design, year two I became frustrated. Frustrated from creating things I knew already existed. How many toasters are there? Even though I thoroughly enjoyed the whole design process, culminating in something I could hold in my hand, something was missing.
That's when I discovered service design.
Service design solved my moral dilemma. This design medium allowed design to expand beyond the product and in to the experience of, well anything. To me, service design is a way to solve any design problem without necessarily producing something ultimately wasteful. If a product is born out of service design thinking, there is a clear purpose and necessity for it. Further, this product will have a whole ecosystem around keeping it's lifespan high. Even it's death can be designed as part of the service. Now, when I create something, I know it has a proper place.
Service design brings design in to unexpected places.
I love that Service design can reach in to any section of the world, it can help solve the water crisis in third world countries or make your local grocery store provide better services. Design research has also been a passion of my along the way. I enjoy dissecting a situation in to digestible design objectives and goals and then documenting them with graphic design.
I do other things too.
When I'm not designing I spend any spare moment traveling, playing piano and guitar and making films with friends. I enjoy drawing buildings and people watching and discovering new places in a city I have lived in for a long time. At the present moment, I live in Stockholm and am finishing my masters thesis with a design company here. Living in a society that is so well designed for everyone's happiness is a blessing and I can't wait to see where the cold arctic winds blow me next.
