I LOVE the idea of Super Mamas. I am doing something similar in the US called First Teacher -- posted on here somewhere! Could you have this role part-time to allow for more Super Mamas or do you think it is critical that they are full-time? (And, yes, I agree 100% that they must be compensated appropriately!)

Dinah commented on First Teacher: Power to the Parents

Hi, Chioma! Great questions. In terms of getting parent leaders involved -- that was easy. I either had relationships with them already (parents of my one-time students) or found them through word of mouth at a local school and community-organizing organization. In terms of recruiting parent participants, I have gotten a lot of help from community organizations that include First Teacher's dates on their email blasts or monthly calendars. Also, our first site is an elementary school right in the middle of the neighborhood, and one of our parent leaders has kids at that school, so she talks with her friends to bring them in. At this point, participants are starting to bring their friends or cousins or parents, which is really exciting to watch the cohort grow through word of mouth. Does that answer your question?
In terms of funding, we get about 20% of our funding from individuals -- I targeted parents and teachers to start. We have been holding fundraising barbeques and parties in peoples' homes -- especially in the more affluent suburbs. 80% comes from small family foundations and larger ones.
It seems like a lot of ideas for this challenge center around tapping into families pre-existing knowledge and resources and helping to get parents into positions of teaching and leadership in authentic ways. I love it. Thanks.
