Temba commented on JIRANI BORA-Bridging the Divides

Hello Ikong James

Thank you very much for the feedback. We will consider the views you mentioned for the improvement of our idea in order to build the concrete bridge between host community and refugees in Kigoma region

Temba commented on JIRANI BORA-Bridging the Divides

Hello Marie-Noëlle. RUBANGIZA

Sungusungu was formed in Kigoma region as a result of lawlessness. These are some of the reasons why villagers feel that the police are unable to deal properly with crimes. It is said that the Police are not only slow in responding to crime reports, but also that they do not seem to have the commitment, determination, courage and/or patience demanded for the task. Jirani Bora use Sungusungu to provides the efforts to suppress crimes between refugees and welcoming/Host community to lives as a good Neighbors

Temba commented on JIRANI BORA-Bridging the Divides

Hello Ikong James

D. What will be the main deliverable to the platform is it to train the "sungusungu" to increase levels of security or to train communities in skill activities enabling them to work togther for common goal.

Both of them will be our strategic deliverable in the following ways:

a. First, as I explained before, Jirani Bora: This is the Swahili word that means Good neighbor This is the platform that recruits and train village/traditional security groups locally known as "sungusungu" to become Good neighbors Champion and facilitate improved community security management. Sungusungu will acquire the capacity building, manuals, and general technical skills to provide free counseling, conflict mediation techniques, legal aid and assisting the conflict victim from both sides to live free from violence and exploitation. Jirani Bora aims to improve community security and safety between the welcoming (Host) communities and refugees relation by reducing three types of violence: criminal violence, inter-communal violence, and violence against women and girls. Jirani Bora will help to decrease tensions and misunderstandings between the refugee/migrant population and the host population. Over time, the occurrences of violence and conflicts will reduce and community mindset will show change. Changing mindsets is a long term process, but refugees/hosts will receive help with their cases are immediately resolved with this sustainable social assets model in their community. Of course, Sungusungu serve as significant pillars when it comes to disputes/conflicts resolution at the community levels between refugees and host communities. Empowered communities and individuals take positive action to access their rights and thus justice.

b. Second,Jirani Bora will train both welcoming/Host communities and refugees in skill activities enabling them to work together for a common goal. Empowerment means that both communities develop the skills that address their needs to use the local resources and laws to positively influence their lives as good neighbors and socio-economic Partners. Jirani Bora will Design and Support formal and informal spheres of interaction between refugees and host communities to share local socio-economic activities, business, and allow them safely interact with one another and break stereotypes that fuel conflict, and create new narratives of peace. These community opportunities all deeply improve human dignity and human rights on both sides. Diminishing relative deprivation on one side and improving self-reliance on the other are mutually connected and can be readily addressed by overcoming some of the humanitarian-development divides that persist in the region. These activities will open up opportunities to address the broader causes of violence more systematically. These activities including as follows:
1. Sports and Games: These could relieve the refugees from stress and reduce mental health challenges. This makes both refugees and host community come together to discuss issues and the coping mechanism for other problems in reducing the stress
2. Food solution Activities: There is a clear correlation between the decrease in food rations in the camps and an increase in theft by refugees and in the host communities. Refugees shared their gardening methods with HC and the HC eagerly learned from the refugees, expecting these refugees will be their customers in the future
3. Skills solution Activities: We link refugees and host communities youth with Local Vocational Training centers and business training. They work together as equal partners commonly solving community challenges and planning their future, learn from each other and to live in harmony.
