These are such great ideas! I am also located in Virginia, and one thing I often hear when bringing up the idea of restructuring how schooling is done is the concern about school sports. I have been told that school sports are very important for many students to be able to go to college (scholarships) and that it is important to keep schools from being able to recruit students who are not "zoned" for the school. How does your organization deal with the question of sports? I find the creation of cohorts especially intriguing. I see it not only as allowing a better learning environment for academics, but for bringing together people in cities that may not otherwise interact. What reactions have you received from parents, either negative or positive, about creation of cohorts? Would they be voluntary or would the school system assign mandatory cohorts? Would they change throughout the year?
Donna Teuber: I love this idea -- we need to get away from a system that forces all students to follow a strict schedule and curriculum that may not be based upon their learning needs. I was particularly interested in your idea of a continuous bus loop along with multi use of the school space. It would be a solution to multiple problems. What are your thoughts on discipline issues and student safety in such an environment?
