Yes, this configuration is ideal in a fixed/mobile environment as you described. However, I have been collaborating with Ivan Morte, from "Custodium.net", that has a solution that I believe could work in a completely mobile environment to centrally monitor, (via web portal), the temperature of the NYC Doctor at the bowling alley or wherever and send an email or sms alert to the appropriate personnel if the temp exceeded a predetermined threshold.

Will let Ivan confirm my assumptions assuming he sees this post.

Thanks. Working on it!!

Several vendors provide gateways that have cellular , (gsm, cdma) and/or wifi access to the internet for centralized portal access to the sensor data. The sensors themselves can communicate to the gateway via un-licensed 900mhz spectrum, ZigBee or ZWave. The gateways run about $250-300 and the sensors range from $50-150 depending upon type, (commercial, industrial, consumer grades). Under an opex model, including a 1gb data plan, a gateway and a sensor could be as low as $25/month. In addition, each gateway could support several, 100+, sensors.
