Check out our new paper on the genetics of Ebola susceptibility in bats at eLife (http://elifesciences.org/content/4/e11785). We show that NPC1 has indeed undergone accelerated evolution in bats, and present evidence that this is one outcome of an evolutionary arms race between filoviruses and bats.

Problem with this idea: the NPC1 binding site in GP is only exposed in endosomes after proteolytic cleavage. A receptor decoy would be unable to access and block GP efficiently. Potential solution: target such a decoy to endosomes. We are working on this.
