Thanks, Maaz for you well intentioned article but it contains a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation. First, nobody provides phone service for free that I know of. In particular, the lifeline programs are paid for through government funding. a participant is only allowed to choose one provider and it comes out of the program for their benefit. although it may not come directly out of the user's pocket, it comes out of his allowable resources. All of the lifeline providers are making money form the government program. Choose your provider carefully, some are better than others. In particular, the reference to Budget is very misleading, their service is very poor, they do not comply with FCC regulations, and here are other providers that are better.
