I think in an ideal world, we would all want to choose our own adventure. I think the problem comes down to creating the structure within which we can do so. If there are certain requirements or assessments that we all need to complete, and that are meant to be done so in a standardized way, it can make it difficult to give free range to students. Unless, of course, the choose your own adventure eventually all leads back to the same place...

Thanks, Kate! I'm very much looking forward to seeing where this challenge goes. I actually teach Grade 7, so my students aren't in high school yet, but I love the depth of conversation that I can go into with them already even in middle school. I actually did read Jim's post about interdisciplinary opportunities, but I have yet to read his Google, Pixar, IDEO post in depth. Shall do that as soon as I can.

I agree wholeheartedly with your statement, and I know some schools have moved towards interdisciplinary studies and cross-appointment in an attempt to address this need. I wonder what some of the barriers might be to increasing the accessibility of interdisciplinary/cross-faculty learning opportunities.
