About the Global Conversations Project

Extending the reach of Amplify to communities without reliable access to the internet.

Finding truly human-centered solutions to our Amplify challenges means understanding the needs, desires and day-to-day constraints of low-income communities around the globe. In an effort to include those voices in each new Amplify challenge, we launched the Global Conversations project. Leveraging context-appropriate technology—like simple mobile phones, community radio, and in-person meetups, we’re able to extend the reach of Amplify to communities without reliable access to the internet or widespread literacy.

About the Global Conversations Project

In our first Amplify challenge, we held our first Global Conversations experiment in India during the Ideas phase of the challenge. For the Zero to Five challenge, we built upon what we learned, launching two live prototypes in India and Tanzania to engage parents and community members during the Research phase. Here's how it worked:

The Zero to Five challenge is introduced on TV and radio programs in Tanzania and India.
People call into IVR lines and are asked to share with a story from thier lives.
Shared stories are translated and uploaded to the OpenIDEO website.
OpenIDEO contributors read these stories and comment on them.
Comments from OpenIDEO users are translated into Swahili or Hindi and recorded.
Callers in Tanzania and India get texts alerting them to comments on their story and can call in to listen.

We received 5,117 stories through our prototypes during the Research phase of the Zero to Five challenge. Most of the callers we heard from were under 20 years old and half of them had never accessed the internet before. We posted many of the stories collected directly on OpenIDEO for other challenge participants to comment. Check out some of the posts from Bihar and Jharkhand in India and from across Tanzania.
