OpenIDEO Chapter Platform — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the OpenIDEO Chapter Platform?

We built this platform alongside our community to help strengthen and grow our OpenIDEO Chapters worldwide. Through this platform, you can connect with other OpenIDEOers in your local community and engage with others in the global community outside of the Challenge context. For Organizers, the platform includes a robust CRM system and features like an in-platform email client. This is a part of our effort to support our offline communities by providing Chapters with more support, structure and tools.

All OpenIDEO Chapters will transition to the online platform, and is required for official OpenIDEO Chapters to stay within our global network.

Why are we launching this Platform?

Our team collectively interviewed more than 100 community members and Organizers a part of our OpenIDEO Chapters network. We learned a few key things:

  • It's been hard for Chapter Organizers to manage their communities. Prior to this Platform, Organizers were managing several Google Sheets and passing out sign-in and contact forms at events. Especially for our larger Chapters (closing in on 1,000 participants) it became nearly impossible to manage all of these contacts in a cohesive way.

  • We didn't concretely understand what was happening on-the-ground.  Without a technological platform to collect and organize important data, we were unable to accurately keep track of the activities and impact of our offline communities worldwide. We were relying on one-on-one communication, which is an unsustainable way to support our community especially at scale.

  • Local communities existed in a vacuum. Aside from the OpenIDEO.com platform, which only allowed our community to connect within the framework of a Challenge, we didn’t have a single, digital space for our global community to connect. Now, not only will we be able to build strong local communities through the Chapter Platform, but we’ll also be able to create an even stronger global network.

  • Our community wanted to deepen their impact during and beyond a Challenge. This is just the beginning. This is one way we’re exploring how our community can deepen their impact and extend momentum beyond a 3-month OpenIDEO Challenge.

Will you be adding features to the platform?

This is just the first version of our OpenIDEO Chapters Platform, so we're learning and soliciting feedback from our community to iterate on it. Our community will be using this Google Sheet to report bugs and suggestions, and we’ll also be responsive to our hello@openideo.com e-mail address. Our goal is to build new, helpful features into future versions and have more integration with the Challenge platform.

What’s the quick zinger about the platform?

The OpenIDEO Chapters Platform has been designed as a shared space to spark conversations beyond the context of a Challenge and build meaningful connections in our offline communities.

How is this different than Facebook, WeChat, Email, or any other outreach channels that I’m already using?

We thought about integrating into existing social platforms, but decided to build a new one because we wanted to have full integration with OpenIDEO.com and our Challenges, and be able to design features that directly respond to our community’s needs and desires.

What are our assumptions for the OpenIDEO Chapter Platform?

  • That this OpenIDEO platform will be used by our Chapter Organizers and community
  • That the platform helps Chapter Organizers strengthen and support their communities
  • That the platform has been designed to be both intuitive and conducive to community building
  • This platform will help us scale the size and impact of our communities worldwide

How do I transition my community to Chapters?

  1. Get cozy with your local Chapter page and the larger platform - this is the new OpenIDEO online hub! Bonus points if you check out other Chapters and start conversations with fellow Organizers and community members.
  2. Prepare your Chapters page to go live, whether it’s populating it with fun pictures from past events or interesting topics for conversations
  3. Check all of your Chapter’s active online communities—whether it’s Facebook, WeChat, Email, or another platform—to create a catch-all list that you can use to invite to your OpenIDEO Chapter page
  4. Take a look at the message template [link here] that we created for you, and tailor the language to best suit the unique needs of your community
  5. Make the announcement to your community and let us know how it feels! Ping the Chapters Fairy here.

How do I use # to filter conversations?

To help you find the right conversations quickly, you can filter posts with a hashtag function. You're welcome to use the default hashtags, their purposes are below:

#burningquestion - What is a question you have for your community?

#seekinginspiration - Looking for inspiration around a certain topic or skill? Ask the community.

#didyouknow - Share a fact or piece of knowledge to the community.

#hello - Introduce yourself to the community

#mychallenge - Pose a challenge that you'd like your community to solve.

#project - Replace "project" with a name of a project you're working on in your community (e.g. #BikeShare)

What is the upvote function?

Community members can upvote any conversations or answers to increase traction on given topics. Instead of having multiple questions and conversations on the same topic, you can simply upvote ones similar to what you seek.
