Using local food/recipes to feed children

The purpose is to teach mothers how to use the local grown food, and local recipe to provide their children with healthy food. In each developing country, there are local foods and recipes people are accustomed to. What is lacking usually is nutrient information about the food or recipe people are accustomed to. This project will inform parents, especially mothers about the nutrients found in the local food, and recipes; train mothers to cook food that will provide their children with appropriate nutrients for their healthy growth.

The idea intends to use local knowledge, in this case, food to help mothers feed their children appropriately. Because the food used in this project is grown locally, the idea is just to provide information about the nutrient contained in the food, and show parents why a specifc local food will be good for their child's growth or development.  I believe it will be a success. Parents in each community will participate or contribute their knowledge to the design of the training on how to put together an appropriate diet for their children, based on local recipes. Parents will be asked to list or give details on the different local recipes, and project participants will build on that information to help parents select adequate recipes  important for their children's healthy development.

Who will benefit from this idea and where are they located?

Communities in Central Africa, especially Cameroon will benefit from this project. The idea can also be adopted or applied in any other country or continent.

How could you test this idea in a quick and low-cost way right now?

To test this idea, I would have to meet with leaders of local communities such as women associations, or women leaders. I would have to organize sessions of information on the idea to have locals' participation, and would need to work with local hospitals or nutritionists to assess or validate recipes health benefits.

Diffusion of the idea

:We are thinking about using local media such as FM radios, and partnering with religious leaders, and leaders from the community to get the information or idea to people. Radio is a technology that has been successfully adopted in Africa, and there are FM radios in different local languages. This is a great way to reach many people even in poor communities. So we will be developing programs/tutorials that will be delivered through radio in addition to the face-to-face demonstrations organized in partnership with leaders in the communities.

What kind of help would you need to make your idea real?

Financial help is need, and feedback from the OpenIDEO community.

Is this an idea that you or your organization would like to take forward?

  • Yes. I am ready and interested in testing this idea and making it real in my community.

Hi Rebecca,

This idea is great. You should consider looking into the PD Hearth model. I've found it very successful in rural communities. It looks at what the mothers with healthy children in rural communities are doing differently then those with not so healthy children. All the knowledge comes from the community.

Hi Ellen,

Thanks for your input. Yes, when the community is engaged in the process, chances of accepting and adopting new ideas are high.
