THE TOTO GARI - AN EXAMPLE OF VALUE BASED CHILD CARE

THE TOTO GARI (toto means child in swahili while Gari means a vehicle) IS A MOBILE CHILD CARE CENTRE(ITS ON VEHICLE, NOT A BUILDING-children like mobile things) THAT IS SPECIFICALLY BRANDED TO APPEAL TO CHILDREN AND PARENTS BECAUSE OF THE FUN ASSOCIATED WITH IT. THE MESSAGE OF THE TOTO GARI IS THAT CHILDREN UNDER FIVE YEARS CAN STILL THRIVE EVEN WITHOUT ADEQUATE MATERIAL PROVISIONS AND THAT THEY MAINLY NEED TO BE HAPPY. THE TOTO GARI IS COORDINATED BY A GROUP OF CHILD CARE EXPERTS, MENTOR MOTHERS AND MENTOR FATHERS WHO OVERSEE ITS VISITS AND ACTIVITIES IN SPECIFICALLY CENTRAL AREAS(MARKETS OR CHURCHES) Within LOW INCOME communities spreading the message of value based child upbringing and a shift from material based child care.

The message of the toto gari is that the people in low income areas need to change their mindset to child care and how they can have sources of income. The toto gari coordinators being the message of alternative thinking where they tell the parents of children under five in low income communities that they need to change their mindset from material based child care to value based childcare since most of them cannot afford the basic necessities of the child. The Toto Gari coordinators give insight to the parents depending on where they are the possible ways of creating alternative and innovative sources of income that will help them provide their children with the basic needs like food and clothing. The Toto gari coordinators plus the childcare experts in the van move to localities where these families are and give them insight in a casual environment on how they can take care of their kids just by keeping them in a constantly happy environment of the family and the community.
We think it might succed because with the coordinators giving the parents alternative solutions that are easy to implement, the parents might pick them up.It also doesnt cost anything to be happy while using whats readily available. Children are also attracted to happiness. It stays with them.
Questions for the community:
Would you come ciew the Toto Gari yourself?
Do you think there's a need for change of mindset in sources of income in low income communities?

Who will benefit from this idea and where are they located?

The families of low income bracket (their children under five, the care givers and the family at large)

How could you test this idea in a quick and low-cost way right now?

Tell parents of nursery school children of a family fun day where there will be inter family competitions and prizes to be won

What kind of help would you need to make your idea real?

Feedback from OpenIdeo regarding the possible use of change of mindset at solution? Feedback from Child Care Experts regarding the shift from material based childcare to value based childcare and if this is feasible in say 3 years? Partners who could possibly fund this prototype? Insight from OpenIdeo regarding how to ensure the insight given to communities during one Toto Gari session would work?

Is this an idea that you or your organization would like to take forward?

  • Yes. I am ready and interested in testing this idea and making it real in my community.

Interesting stuff, Churchill! Perhaps you might consider helping people better grasp how this idea could play out by describing some example scenarios which describe user journeys through some of the proposed activities you've outlined. Check this example: http://www.openideo.com/open/e-waste/concepting/neighbourhood-e-waste-champion/ where a few simple scenarios were created in an attempt to explain the goodness on the idea in a human-centered way.
