The Career of Childcare Workers

This idea is meant to support the childcare worker (people who run their own daycare out of their home or folks who run a larger child care facility). It's focused on a few goals 1) to influence the perceptions around what it means to be a childcare provider 2) to support childcare providers in their career. It stemmed from the following question: How might we improve the career for early childcare workers in Vermont?

We found through some of our research and conversations that the burnout rate for childcare providers was near 40 percent.  Some childcare providers, shared stories around pay and perceptions around their professoin:
"Two of my staff just quit, both for jobs with higher pay." -Director of a center
"I can barely pay my bills and can't afford health insurance." - Director of a center
"I have a teacher who was embarrassed to tell her parents that she was going to be a pre-k teacher."  - Director of a seperate center

We'd like to build off of the personal experiences of childcare providers in Vermont, identify resources throughout the industry and analogous worlds to understand  How we might best support childcare workers in their carreers?

Who will benefit from this idea and where are they located?

We are designing for childcare workers in Vermont in the U.S.

How could you test this idea in a quick and low-cost way right now?

* Get further feedback and insight on what childcare providers need the most. *Collect narratives from the community to tell and share the role their childcare providers played in their development.

What kind of help would you need to make your idea real?

Participation from childcare providers in the state of Vermont.

Is this an idea that you or your organization would like to take forward?

  • Yes. I am looking for partners that might be interested in taking this idea forward in their communities.
