small fish Is got from the lake, sun dried for one day, roasted, and then the milling takes place using the machine (40 horse power).sorghum, millet, soybeans are got from stores prepared and then milling process takes place after all this, these foods are mixed together to come up with a nutritious product for porridge and can be baked for a heavy meal, it is good for the kids below the age of five years and mothers. It will be offered it at a cheaper cost to low income communities.

yes hassani thank for sharing the idea but our peaple most of them in rural areas are un learned and many preffers finished goods however due to inflation the minimal cost of living in rural areas is even raising to 3dollars a day.

Good concept you have there, however in most rural countries most woman have more then 3 children. think of a way to provide for families who do not live on 2 dollars a day. Maybe a book on ways people can do these specialties at their home with different ingredients?

Well Morris, I like the thought of kicking out malnutrition out of all continents. I would be the happiest if we could reduce stunting from the current 33% to even 30% in the next five years in Uganda! Talking of mukene, I know the big fish in Uganda has become super expensive for the common man to buy. I also know that there is now super competition between use of mukene for human food and for animal feeds. Given all this pressure, could you or Bosco share some statistics on the current estimate of mukene harvested in Lake Victoria? I think it is good for us to keep in mind how much we can realistically obtain say in the next decade if our goal is to ensure every child of complementary feeding age gets some mukene blend.

Hi Alex sorry been out of office for some few days but i loved your response and i think the fisheries department under the ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries has embarked on a move intended to ensure that silver fish (Mukene) gains prominence on the menu in most homes and hotels as well as earn more income for the fishing community.
Uganda is richly endowed with natural water bodies, and fisheries play a very important role as a basis for subsistence and commercial livelihood.
The silver fish, one of the three fish stocks found in Lakes Victoria and Kyoga that supports fishery in Uganda, has evolved to become a meal that breaks status boundaries.
Statistics indicate that Mukene forms 41 percent of the fish stock in Lake Victoria and 17 percent of fisheries yield in Lake Kyoga.
However, despite the huge volume of the small fish species in the water bodies, we need to work on new ways to expand the mukene production in the future.
At the moment Mukene is still a work in progress in as far as developing it as an export is concerned. “Adding value requires a lot of research, but with partners in Food Science and Technology department at Makerere University and the Fisheries Institute, a lot is being done. They are also thinking of developing smell free Mukene.

Dr Anthony Taabu Munyaho, an aquatic engineering and gear technology officer from the National Agriculture Research Organisation (NARO), said Lake Victoria is experiencing depletion of Tilapia and Nile perch fish, but with an increase of both Silverfish (Mukene) and Daaga (Enkejje).

The debate attended by different environmentalists and civil society organizations at the Uganda Museum was aimed at finding solutions to protect the 68,800 Km² Lake.
Dr Munyaho differed with the other conservationists’ view that Lake Victoria is dying out.
That this was being an alarm. Only 17 per cent of the lake is affected but they can sustain the lake,” Dr Munyaho said

Bosco, thanks for your feedback. Well, with all tilapia and nile perch almost all being exported, highest percentage of low income earners are dependent on mukene and other small fish. I see the same scenario of only the rich affording mukene ten years from today. I am optimistic about your proposed idea for now. You mention FST of Makerere University. Are they currently running any enterprises on mukene?

Uganda is among the resource constraint countries that continue to have high levels of under nutrition, particularly among young children, adolescents, pregnant/lactating women and adults with chronic diseases. Under nutrition poses a serious threat to the vulnerable group and compromises growth development of children and quality of life of adults and contributed to illnesses and over 40 % of pediatric deaths. In 2006, over 38% of children under the age of five years were stunted, 6% wasted, and 16% underweight (UDHS 2006). The double-burden of malnutrition among the pregnant women was 12% (6% urban and 13% rural) underweight (BMI < 18.5), (Uganda Bureau of Statistics; UBOS, 2007). Likewise, the prevalence of anemia prevalence increased in 2006 to 73% in children 6-59 months of age, 49% in women of reproductive age, and 28% in 15-54 year old males (UBOS, 2007).

Mukene contains phosphorous which aids brain and bone development. It has also got nutritional values such as vitamin A and E and fatty oils that prevent poor vision and promote good skin texture. Studies have shown that diets rich in Omega-3 can result in increased learning ability, problem-solving skills, focus, and memory.

Bosco, very good intentions you got here. I know as a country of technical issues we are faced with is coming up with standards for processed complementary foods for children 6-23 months. I see you intend to make blend of fish, legumes and cereals. How do you intend to address the issue of intoxication and rancidity that come with mukene being exposed to light and being kept for a long time?

I remember way back in early 2000 when packed mukene first hit the market, it was so cheap. Now to get a small packet of processed mukene, one has to part with not less than UGX. 1800. With costs of grinding and packaging added to this, I suspect it will get even more costly. Keeping in mind all food safety and standards issues, how much do you anticipate selling your mukene at?
