More children between the ages of 0-5 years in low income communities suffer as results of adverse health, growth and development challenges prevalent in their local communities. These challenges are due to poor nutrition, education and lack of knowledge by parents for a well and total child upbringing. In other instances parents in remote and rural communities are totally isolated from information hubs and access to essential health and education facilities available for their infant children. In addition there exists lack of proper health service facilities and professionals to care for sick children and parents. There are other factors such as lack of proper nutrition, access to clean water and food, access to childhood immunizations, and poverty among rural dwellers, contribute greatly against infant well thriving. According to WHO Reports, the rate of infant mortality is more in low income communities. An available statistics reveals an alarming rate of 44% of deaths of babies under five years old.  Two countries India 21% and Nigeria 13% together account for more than 1/3 of deaths among children below 5 years of age. There is therefore need for concerted efforts and rise by global institutions, agencies to join efforts and provide feasible platform for the thriving and overall well-being of children for their total mental and physical development and wellbeing.

Infant Rescue Mission and Well Kids Hub Society is a platform meant to provide information and facilities for education, health and training to parents and kids in low income communities for the overall wellbeing of the child leveraging on some established institutions in communities and seeking to establish such projects in institutions and communities where non exists. The program is an integrated approach to child health and education that focuses on the well-being of the whole child.

IRMWKS will provide low cost motorbike ambulance to take women who are in labour to hospital, therefore cutting down on the number of expectant mothers who have to walk for several hours to receive medical attention. This part is an essential health services intervention project which provides care and support for women through pregnancy and childbirth, and immunization and treatment for their babies. The program shall have funded training for nurses and midwives and initiate to build better clinics to meet increased demand for maternal healthcare. This intervention, shall address the problem of lack of proper training of healthcare workers and lack of counseling caretakers of sick children.
The program will have trained and equipped information nutrition and health officers who shall disseminate information and enlightenment on  nutrition and improved care practices in homes for the total wellbeing of the child.
This intervention would be targeted towards mothers, infants, children, families, and the environments in Nigeria. An IRWKS project is scaled towards cutting down infant and child mortality. It would benefit the entire community because it would provide both learning and care. This program aims to reduce death, illness, and disability, and to promote improved growth and development among children under five years of age. IRWKS provides both preventive and curative elements that are essential for implementation by families, communities as well as health facilities. We shall have components for improving case management skills of healthcare staff, improving overall health systems, and improving family and community health practices. This initiative shall address education of parents, early childhood development and improving daily living conditions programs.

Who will benefit from this idea and where are they located?

This project is targeted towards mothers, infants, children, families in Nigeria This idea is specifically designed to be implemented based on the current situation and peoples styles of living condition. Notwithstanding the same project can as well be implemented in any other country where there in need to improve the thriving state of the child between 0 - 5 years old. We have thought in minds that children and parents will tremendously benefit by the implementation of the idea as it shall drastically cut down to more than 50% of the present rate of child infant mortality of under five years anniversary and improve on their living condition. However it can be replicated in any low income countries with modification considering differences cultures and national differences and interests.

How could you test this idea in a quick and low-cost way right now?

In order to test idea we hope to test it in small community in Abia State Nigeria. An adhoc working group will be sent to communities to have an understudy of prevailing needs and possible solutions. We shall analyze the situation through collection of data of the current status of the health care system in a given community in Abia State or any other part of a state in Nigeria. The analysis shall involve the use of facility inventory questionnaires, health worker interviews, observation of sick-child consultations, and an exit interview of the caretaker of a sick child. The facility inventory questionnaire is intended to get information on departments, staff, and equipment at healthcare facilities. The healthcare worker interviews provide information of training and supervision of the healthcare workers. The sick-child consultations, the health provider’s interaction with the caretaker and sick child observation provides information on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the sick child, as well as the counseling of the caretaker. In the exit interview, a questionnaire shall be given to the caretaker of the sick child aimed to find out the knowledge given to the caretaker by the health workers about how to continue with care.

What kind of help would you need to make your idea real?

We shall need agencies such as WHO, United Nation Children’s Fund (UNICEF), DFID, etc that will aid in providing technical and financial support and resources . The collaboration and involvement of the host communities in the establishment of the project is necessary for viability of the scheme.

Is this an idea that you or your organization would like to take forward?

  • Yes. I am ready and interested in testing this idea and making it real in my community.
