FIRST FIVE YEARS PARENTING KIT

Parents and family members are most potential people for children thrive from the earliest stage of their development milestones. FIRST FIVE YEARS PARENTING KIT would inform and provide opportunities for them to fulfill their roles and responsibilities on providing best parenting skills to their children.

Written by

90% of human brain development is ocured during first five years of life. Though this period is critical for setting human development foundation, most parents and family members in developing countries are unaware of how to invest to their children, as the result that most children in the community lack early emotional, physical and cognitive support.

FIRST FIVE YEARS PARENTING KIT would produced in understandable languages and cultures that provide opportunities for parents in low-income communities accessing information in a compatible toolkit with simple guidelines in form of DVDs and printed templates that inform and guide parents on the best parenting practices skills during first five years of child development milestones. However, the DVD materials will be developed in context of peoples' cultures, customs, believes to capture most and best practice regarding upbringing their children. The templates will be developed by adopting both international standard and local contexts to capture significant issues regarding child needs and peoples' cultures and believes.  (Please download the a sample template at the right side of this post)

Local support networks and famous places where people often visit or gather such as Mother and Child Health (MCH) clinics, Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers, public schools, community centers, churches, video show centres or community shops, community volunteers etc, will be used as focal platforms for parents to access the kit, receive regular trainings on how to apply kit and share their experiences to one another.  In addition, the program will create cooperation mechanism with local radio and TV programs to creat awarenes and educating community widely. Through the above mentioned networks and radio/TV programs community members will gain knowledge and motivation to mentor other parents on applying kit and nurture children in the community collectively.

The operation plan will be guided by the principle of LEAN HOW TO USE KIT; TAKE IT HOME, LEARN & APPLY GAINED SKILLS; SHARE THE BEST PRACTICES with OTHERS; and PROVIDE FEEDBACK. Follow-up measures include beneficiaries phone number documenting for information sharing and receiving feedback, monitoring and evaluation procedures will be taken to inform the program progress and how the kit has impacted their parenting skills.

This idea might suseed because it uses simple media to inform, remind and guide parents on their responsibilities to nurture their children and give them the best start from the eaarliest stage.
It gives parents opportunity to apply local available resources and natural environment to rise thir children as induviduals, group and communty at large.
It might be adopted and modified to feet local and global contexts.

UPDATE 26/11/2014.
RESEARCH EVIDENCE FOR HOW THE SAME PROJECT TO THIS IDEA SUCCEEDED
The First 5 Kit for New Parents is an innovative, evidence based
approach to reach new parents with information about
parenting practices and community resources. The “Kit” is a
low-cost, multi-media collection of information for parents of
children 0-5 years and their providers. It includes DVDs
(featuring celebrities, experts and diverse parents), and
printed materials that were written to be widely accessible to
parents, including those with limited literacy, and those who
speak Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Korean
or English. Since 2001, the Kit has been distributed free of
charge to 500,000 California parents each year through
diverse perinatal and childcare programs. The Kit model was
evaluated in a 3-year longitudinal survey of intervention and
comparison groups of English- and Spanish-speaking
parents and providers. Findings showed high Kit usage
(87%) and satisfaction (94%). Parents in the intervention
group showed significantly greater knowledge gains and
reported better practices than parents in the comparison
group. Providers considered the Kit a valuable resource to
incorporate into their educational programs. The Kit model
has now been adapted and extended to four other states
and has reached over five million families.

Who will benefit from this idea and where are they located?

The primary beneficiaries are children, parents or child primary caregivers and family members. Secondary beneficiaries are Daycare/crèches centres, CED teachers, MCH clinics, women groups. To start the project will take place in Arusha city particularly at slum communities and will expand to other communities.

How could you test this idea in a quick and low-cost way right now?

Firstly, in first five days our team will visit, identify and inform the beneficiaries about the idea and collect their views and opinions. The task will be handled through sampling groups of 15 beneficiaries include 8 representatives presenting child attachment figures, parents or child primary caregivers and family members and 7 representatives representing the following existing networks Daycare/crèches centres, ECD teachers, MCH clinics, church/ mosque, women groups and community leader. Secondly, our team will review and document potential participants’ views and opinions hence develop the initial kit with child development milestones parenting guidelines in two media include DVD and printed leaflets and disseminate to the same participants. The task will be carried for the period of two weeks whereby week I will be used to develop initial media and week II participants will watch/ read and apply the information gained to nurture their children. Thirdly, during the last week our team will revisit participants, learn and collect feedback on how the kit has inspired and impacted them; seek more opinions on which kinds of media/materials may be included to the parenting kit and finally share the outcomes with OpenIDO community.

What kind of help would you need to make your idea real?

We need helps including suggestions and advice from ECD experts on how we can improve this idea. Any comment or feedback from the OpenIDEO Team/ community. Organizations would to partner are welcome.

Is this an idea that you or your organization would like to take forward?

  • Yes. I am ready and interested in testing this idea and making it real in my community.

Great idea. Is it possible that the parenting kits be reusable for each family. This way they can retain the kit and reuse if they later decide to have more children. I'm sure this would also ensure the cost-effective factor for your idea.

Yes they can. since each copy of templates will be laminated for durability. also the DVD will be kept in a hard cover. please see the kit template sample https://d3gxp3iknbs7bs.cloudfront.net/attachments/cd4cc509-612b-4c07-8569-cc255b692d5d.pdf

Hey there! Very nice idea! Inform the parents about the needs of their children in early years is definitely one of the main points about children's good development. I also think that teaching them how to use the kit and using local support networks as platforms for its distribution is really important. What about the DVDs? It's such a great idea, multimedia content, videos, are always easier to absorb information from, but do these parents in low income have access to technologies like this?

Here in Tanzania in urban area is possible where by neighbors can share/borrow the TV and DVD players . Also at the rural area there is opportunity to place these facilities to institutions such as public schools, churches Health/ dispensary and ECD centers where community members gathering and get opportunity to watch these media. However at rural areas we focus much on using templates. please see the template sample https://d3gxp3iknbs7bs.cloudfront.net/attachments/cd4cc509-612b-4c07-8569-cc255b692d5d.pdf

Congratulations to the team for the idea! I came across it and saw right away the potencial it has to impact parents lives. A parenting manual is indeed a very powerful ideia. I was wondering how could the design of the kit help regarding its flexibility and adaptivity. It would be great if the Kit could grow and adapt in the same rhythm as the kid. Maybe a modular structure or something like that, that would always be up to date with the parents concerns and worries. Good job guys

Hi,Elimu, your post is interesting. accoriding to your idea, parents need to access information resources such as parenting kits with multi-media collections including DVDs and printed materials with guidelines , i am wondering the resources are free for them? and do you think they have the enough knowledge or skills to utilize and implement the materials for teaching their children ? besides, i think the expense of this project may be high.

Dear Rong Jun Li thank you for your comment.
Parents will contribute little amount of money approximately will not exceed $10 per kit. However parent will be allowed to duplicate media for non commercial this will even make the kit materials being affordable with less amount of $10.
Regarding their skills to utilize resources I am sure that they will since they will watch the DVD and see what should be done. Please for more information read the my respond to comment of Mr. David Citrin above there.

I think it would be so cool if there was a way that you could incorporate the community in creating these materials -- you could educate community members not only by giving them information, but by actively allowing them to participate in making the educational videos etc. Perhaps there is a way you could design the program such that there is a way for each individual community to make/record their own materials using the same information? Just a thought!

Hi. Thank you for your contribution. It is true that there is need to cooperate with community members in the process of developing these materials. Parents will participate fully in making the video too as the model parents in the community. Please download the parenting template sample provided at the right side of this post. At the first time we will provide them to individuals, as they practice what guided in these templates, we will cooperate with them to capture the best practices, record them, making videos, improve templates and supply to wide community.

A similar idea has been tested elsewhere for newborn babies and it worked perfectly, a great success. I hope that your similar idea, with so much more areas to cover, works as well. Being able to produce it in a low cost way will also make it more effective as there will be more kits for more people.

Hi. A kit sounds like a good way to share information with parents. It would be great to include visual information.
Perhaps you can also include a space on every page for parents to make notes to themselves - either to remember a particular point or a question they might want to ask a nurse or teacher?

Are you planning to use the kit from California and modify it in some way, or did you just post that as an example of a kit in use that has had impact?

Hi Team Elimu, this is an idea whose time has come, as mentioned by charlotte norris, it would be important to look at alternative ways to reach these parents with mass impact, @totohealth we already have a platform that would enable you disseminate content especially the printed guides through our Community Health Volunteers Network, you could start our with the 500 already on board, let us know if this would be of interest to you.

The kit will be developed in simple guidelines in form of DVDs and printed templates. A simple bag with 5 kit's series will be made and disseminated to parents. The DVD documentaries will be developed to demonstrate how the parents will apply local materials and facilities available in their community. As we will provide both written templates the same information will be used to develop the DVD documentaries. This will enable parents with low literacy skills to visualize, learn and talk the same information hence apply them to nurture their children. Please download the sample template at the right side of this idea.

Oh wow, sounds interesting. How can you be sure that families struck by poverty or similar situations may actually have a DVD player to watch these DVDs? Perhaps a viewing is held weekly/monthly by a local church or gathering place? Does the specific community you are aiming this design for actually have access to the technology you have in mind? If not, what can be designed or created to enhance what they already have access to?

Hi. Charlote, thank yo for your comment as questions.
As i have explained in my idea the parents such as those live in poverty or similar situation may have opportunities to watch these DVD materials at neighborhood, local MCHs, churches, cinemas centers etc where there solar power installation. At the beginning the project will operate at the community where there is possibility to access the required technology. However, they have opportunity to use the templates provided for further learning and practicing.
Below here are descriptions provided on how the kit information will reach target beneficiaries.
Local support networks and famous places where people often visit or gather such as Mother and Child Health (MCH) clinics, Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers, public schools, community centers, churches, video show centres or community shops etc, will be used as focal platforms for parents to access the kit, receive regular training on how to apply kit and share their experiences to one another. Hi,
This is a great idea. It seems to be very similar to what we have done with Parent University. Which you can see here: https://openideo.com/challenge/zero-to-five/ideas/parent-university-empowering-parents-to-be-their-child-s-best-teacher-starting-from-birth

One of the big differences between your idea and ours is that you have a component that is very "high-touch". Something that can be very important for young families and first time mothers and fathers. Whereas with Parent University our focus is on scalability. We deliver research-based, developmentally-appropriate learning activities directly to families' mobile devices. Our approach has been rigorously tested and the framework for creating and delivering the content is proven to positively impact learning opportunities within the home. This has been in the US, however. One of the places we will need much help with - should we be lucky enough to be selected - is in working with local communities to ensure that local customs, norms, and cultural expectations are honored and incorporated into the PU curriculum.

It seems to me that there could be a great potential for a collaboration between our respective ideas.

Best of luck moving ahead in the contest!

Hello Chris Thank you for your comment. I really love to hear and see inspirations come from both ideas. Surely our ideas are so similar and i hope we can learn from each other for further collaborations.
I would like to share some information about why we focus to this idea of applying parenting kit.
As the organization we have been doing the same program exactly as yours idea for 3 years now. What we learned from our operation are as following
1. Educational sms sent to parents were long (about 2 or 3 standard sms in one) so parents with low literacy skills were not comfortable to read them. these are the same to your sms provided as an example in you idea descriptions.
2. The sms were deleted in short time due to phone's sms storage limit so parents couldnt review them time to time on what he/she has informed to do.
3. some parents couldnt understand well what they were supposing to do so they asked more clarifications.
4. Parents were suggested to have a manual/templates or visual materials with different child development milestones they might assist them in learning and sharing with others at any time
5. Parents do not have enough time to meet and learn through formal learning platforms but they can share and apply the tool at family and extended families level.

The above experiences has led us to come up with this idea.

Hi, Thanks for sharing this feedback on what you have experienced over the years with your program that is similar to ours. We, too, experienced some of the challenges you mention.

Over the years, however, we have been able to overcome those challenges through a constant process of testing, feedback and iterating. So:
(1) Parents can easily understand almost all of our activities.
(2) Our activities are designed to be easily accessible for caregivers with low literacy levels yet still maintain rigor and adherence to the educational concept being taught and every activity fits within the 160 character limit of an SMS message. (We have also developed slightly longer-from content for our other delivery mechanisms.)
(3) All of our content is differentiated based on developmental levels of the children in their home, so parents do not need any charts or other materials other than their mobile device.
(4) And, finally, we designed our content to be time-sensitive for families. Which is to say, activities can be done in as little as 2 minutes or can be extended to be much longer when paired with content from earlier in the week.

Hopefully you are able to continue to develop your program so that you can overcome the challenges you mention. If so I'm sure it will be well worth the investment.

Achieving this goal is a process of continual user feedback (through focus groups and surveys), A/B testing, and iterating that will lead to better and better products. We've used a combination of Lean Startup principles (see here: http://theleanstartup.com/principles - this one, of course, is focused on technology-centric ventures ) and human centered design principles (see one of IDEO's resources here: http://www.ideo.com/work/human-centered-design-toolkit/ )

Good luck!

It would be great if they could be a participating partner in your proposal. I'm sure that the developers of First Five Kit have invested a lot of time, energy and other resources into making a proven and effective product and have a lot of know-how that they could contribute.

In the US we have seen the effect of not doing the proper R&D to develop a kit concept. For example, Baby Einstein was a wildly popular series of DVDs that were later debunked as having no educational/learning value for the families who watched them. (There is similar research on other early childhood media that claim to have educational impact, but in reality are just entertaining cartoons or games. You can see here for one such example: http://www.joanganzcooneycenter.org/publication/pioneering-literacy/ ) Sesame Street is one of the shining exemplars that is more of the exception than the rule. (Did you know that Sesame Street is the most researched TV program of all time?!) So there are examples that prove that TV programs and DVDs can have a positive impact. And in fact, I know of at least one organization that has partnered with Sesame Street to create learning videos for students in families in Ghana (see here: http://www.idpfoundation.org/idp-rising-schools/partnership-with-sesame-workshop/ )

I speak from personal experience when I say that it takes a significant amount of time, energy and money to create a research-based digital product that will have a positive, measurable impact. For us it took over 2 years for our team to partner with an organization, identify participants for experimental groups and control groups, locate the grant money, find a participating university and a team of researchers, and many other resources just to conduct and publish the study that proves the impact we have on the lives of families who use our product. And the resources that went into conducting this study do not include the years of research and development just to create the content and technology and build up the institutional know-how to execute such a service.

I realize that the concepts may be similar, and that you're not passing off the research findings for the First Five Kit to be claims for the impact of your kit. I wanted to suggest a few of the implications of citing the research of another product and encourage you to reach out to the First Five Kit makers to try to build a partnership.

Clearly the Kit model is a great idea. It takes a lot of research and development, training, testing, and money to develop a successful intervention such as the one that First Five Kit has developed. And they have the know-how to help support you in your endeavor. Good luck!

Thanks for this post - fascinating idea to distribute these kits. Can you provide some more background on where the "parenting best practices" will come from. Similarly, will use WHO recommended developmental milestones? I see the template provided here, and you have provided some key focal areas. I am also interested in how you plan to monitor the success of the program (by what measures/indicators) and assess the mechanisms of impact here (e.g., process measures to evaluate fidelity to the kit's content; financial and other self reported costs; volume based metrics such as the number of kits distributed)? Thanks again, very fascinating idea!

The best parenting practices will come from
1. Use parents who we have already identified through our currently program focusing on improving children learning outcomes that involve parents ECD teachers and child in learning process both at homes and schools environment.
2. We will develop various documentaries (DVDs) describe how to nurture children during the first five years of their life. These documentaries will enable parents to take best actions for nurturing their children.
3. We will provide leaflets with descriptions regarding child development milestones that will enable parents to learn and practices.
Thank you again for let me know about WHO recommended child development milestones definitely we will use them.
The template provided is just a sample I think we can develop the best one especially with those development milestones recommended by WHO.
Regarding program monitoring we plan to
1. Establish database where will document beneficiaries’ information including basic information, numbers of kits distributed and other information provided below here.
2. We will use beneficiaries’ phones to send weekly sms remaining them to practice and recognize their children’s development stages/milestones and provide us feedback.
3. The leaflets will have the indicator columns where parents will mark evidence whether they took proposed actions or have enabled their children reaching appropriate child development milestone recommended. These indicators will be collected in quarterly bases.
4. Visit beneficiaries to observe and collect various stories regarding the impact of the program and document case studies, best practices stories and lesson learned.

Let we team up to make this idea comes true.

I think it'd be interesting to emphasize the principles of your idea structuring meetings and participation tools, as in low-income areas mostly the limited resources can be a restriction if emphasize on the kit/book. Hello Andre Fernandes
I would like to thank you for your comment and also being interested to my idea of organizing kit. The kit we focus to develop is looking like simple bags with five partitions whereby each partition will contain media include DVD and printed templates. Both media will describe areas of child development milestone, parents’ core roles and responsibilities, how to collect and organize materials for supporting their children (most of them are those found in their community/ local made), where to get assistance for further support and expected outcomes. Our target is to reach every child at household level where the child’s first school is and where they spend most of their life time during early year. The kit will provide more opportunity to enable family members to plan time learn and participate in upbringing young children on their own time, share and spread the best practices to other neighbors, friends and relative families on the useful of this kit to the community. Regarding involves local institutions we are an NGO with extensive experiences in Early childhood Development for more than 17 years and we know many things about the ECD needs in the community. I liked the post and in a first view the idea is really good but I think that it might still need a bit of digin properly into it.

On the one hand I can see that you really though about what families and parents could need in this countries, but what if instead of you designing the kid a gathering of all the parents was organized to discuss between everyone what would be best for the children? Because sometimes nobody can know better but the own citizens which are the needs of their children and that unified with your knowledge about it also coul give a much complete and exact cover of the necesitie.

On the other hand I am sure Dvds and technologies could be valuable for the children but what about using more simple and touchable toys? kids of that age are learning how to move, how to take, colours and physical staff draw their attetion completely so what if we included for example;

- Books about certain topics ( Colours, animals, daily life actions, family, food, geography..) that could include a small explanation about each of the different learnings and the word in another languague + some blocks or puzzels with the same topic of the book so that at the same time they could develop their 3d sences. ( Example: drawing of a cat, description, cat in another languague and the shape of the ct to build with blogs)

- Also I find sounds very important so they could have a small instrument with different recorded sounds and also the possibility for them to play with instructions of how to do it if needed.

- Also materials for playing sports( like rackets, or balls)

Finally, it would be really constuctive if each of the families had a pachage with different topics and materials so that each 2 weeks there could be a day in which the whole village or part of it could gather together play togetherand exchange their material for the following to weeks so that not so much money is needed and the iniciative could be more accesible.

Keep fighting for this tipe of ideas, and for a better world! congratulations!

Dear June, Thank you so much for your contribution in this idea. Your comment has excited me and I am really looking forward to cooperate with you in the process of refining this idea. I also would like to put in clear on my thought about this idea then I will need mo contributions from you too.

This idea is focusing to Idea’s mission #3 “Parenting Information” It also built on my post I provided during research phase “I can do better if I know what should be done”. Thus, the purpose of this idea is to come up with an innovation thing that will enable accessibility of information to parent in low income communities. With thoughtful I came up with the idea of developing parenting kit with key materials that will enable parents to gain knowledge and skills toward provide best practices for the best start of their children’s Development milestones during fist five years. Thus, I propose to develop parenting kit with multi-media collections including DVDs and printed materials with guidelines that inform and guide parents on the best parenting practices skills during first five years of child development. (I think here it needs to be rephrased it so it may capture the idea concept. My point here is to enable parents to use these media in malt-ways in learning skills on how to organize materials and use the best parenting practices to child’s appropriate age without interfering the peoples’ cultures, customs and socio-economic levels in upbringing their children.

Your point of “instead of designing the kit a gathering of all the parents was organized to discuss between everyone what would be best for the children” I agree with you, I also think to use “support existing networks” as I have mentioned in this idea at “How could you test this idea in a quick and low-cost way? " and beneficiaries sections.

Regarding using other materials mentioned in your comments such as books toys etc they are great. Here I focused to enable parents to learn how they can use available materials in their surroundings so the kit will inform them what they should do and make sure that child access those materials.
For more information read my respond on how it will be implemented to David’s comment.

Parents will be trained, guided and tracked on how they apply kit’s resources effectively hence enable them to acquire knowledge, skills and experiences to foster children’s social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and language skills.
l strongly agree with this sentence. Because of the training, parents will be more effective to look after their children.

I like the idea that provide multi-media collections to parents in low-income communities to guide them how to raise children in more professional way. Because of some misunderstandings about breastfeed, women in some African countries choose milk powder instead of breast milk, which one of the reasons that lead to high children mortality rate. As we all, know, many people don't get high education in some low-income countries, which will make them refuse changes. Do you think they are willing to and are able to accept the professional and developed parenting skills instead of their traditional ways by learning from the multi-media? Assuming they can, in my opinion, people must cooperate with each other and will make a lot of efforts.

I appreciate that there is guidance and follow up to assist the parent over a long period of time. This model seems very supportive and expands before birth and even as the child grows up.

It's important to see that child support and development is an on-going process.

. During pilot phase will disseminate the kit to few parents through support existing networks mentioned in this post.
2. We will provide information where to get the kit to the public through ICT
3. The kit will be introduced to government health institutions specifically through (MCH) program.
4. We will advocate to decision makers to reinforce the dissemination of this kit to all over the country through No 2 above.
5. For sustainable the kit will not provided free. either we are looking for other development partners who will be interested to donate for dissemination of this kit to a wide community.

6. Further more for the purpose of making sure that the kit is accessible we will create other opportunities such as uploading the kit information to our existing website www.elimu-tz.org, allowing the citizens to make duplication of this kit for non commercial uses.

Hello Elimu!

I am excited by your idea for a First Five Years Parenting Kit. I think it can be very effective to use existing networks (local centers/organizations) to distribute and promote a multi-media kit for parents within the community.

Have you thought about creating a support network specifically for people in the community who use the kit?

From my experience in community development and education, I learned that educational programs really flourish when the people in the program are encouraged to talk about their experiences, revelations, or insights with others in the program. The discussion creates a LOCAL support network. Within that network, local leaders and mentors can rise up to support for newcomers (say, in our case, new parents).

In addition to this thought, here is another question... how do we encourage users of the First Five Kit to empower other parents in their community so that all children can have the support they need to thrive?

Thank you for your comment. your comment has considered and i have taken the step to refine the idea. Below here are updates made to this idea.

Local support networks and famous places where people often visit or gather such as Mother and Child Health (MCH) clinics, Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers, public schools, community centers, churches, video show centres or community shops etc, will be used as focal platforms for parents to access the kit, receive regular trainings on how to apply kit and share their experiences to one another. Through these networks community members will gain knowledge and motivation to mentor other parents on applying kit to nurture children in the community collectively.

The operation plan will be guided by the principle of LEAN HOW TO USE KIT; TAKE IT HOME, LEARN & APPLY GAINED SKILLS; SHARE THE BEST PRACTICES with OTHERS; and PROVIDE FEEDBACK. Follow-up measures include documented for information sharing and receiving feedback, monitoring and evaluation will inform how the kit has impacted their parenting skills.

Hi ,
wonderful idea. .after reading the whole a thought which came into my mind is. how can we leverage mobile phones into this kit. for example a mobile phone service which will send the parents instructions on how to bring up the child. a text a day or couple of times a day. It can have tasks broken down. ...reminding the parents what are the best food for their kids. etc etc.. the parent could also send back information to the community ( or the centre which runs the service regarding what task she has performed or what her child has been eating etc etc..she could use a service like this. https://openideo.com/challenge/zero-to-five/research/missed-call-for-information and give information to the health worker. The health worker or community can monitor precisely based on the inputs given by the parents what nutritional supplies ( or activities or vaccinations ) are required for the child . The whole thing can also be like a gaming activity where the parents get some points for performing or being part of the activity and they could redeem their points which they get in some other ways. >.

Hello Ajmal Manzil
I am so inspired with your comment. We have been sending such sms to parents for 3 years now. What we learned from them sometimes they have been exhausted with so many sms. Also they asked if we can provide some parenting skills materials they can watch or read on their own time. This idea has considered their opinions and would liker to develop and supply such kit. This will enable parents to deal with the needs of a child at specific child development milestone. We then use mobile technology to remind, followup and data collection. Most of the information you have mentioned above will be part of the kits' information so as to equip parent with parenting skills at different child milestones. Let we continue to collaborate and shape our ideas

What I like most about your idea is how comprehensive it is. I like how you've mentioned leveraging existing networks, such as MCH clinics, ECD centers, etc. I also think your component about involving radio stations and other media networks is also very innovative.

Some questions that I have for your idea are:
1. How will you carry out monitoring and evaluation of the impact that your kits cause? (As you'll read below, my team is also leveraging already-existing networks to carry out our idea, so I think we could learn from each other about what would make effective M&E operations)
2. Who is your audience for these kits? What if they do not have DVD players or other resources for viewing the various components of your kit?
3. Have you considered making each kit culturally-specific? What resources will you use to translate your kits into different languages, and if you want to include culturally-specific elements, who will ensure that these elements are appropriate?
4. Have you also considered including a "facts vs. myths" leaflet that includes many misconceptions that parents from that specific area may have (to be identified by your local partners)?

If you have the time, I'd love to hear your comments on my team's idea, under the Parenting Information mission: Maternal and Under 5 Health and Education Clinics. (https://openideo.com/challenge/zero-to-five/ideas/maternal-and-under-5-health-and-education-clinics) My NGO currently has strong relationships with 72 partner schools (both primary and secondary schools) in the communities in which we conduct mobile clinics and age-appropriate education in. We now are attempting to leverage these networks to host our MNCH clinics. Any ideas on how to better our idea would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The audiences of these kits are parents and social service providers such as MHC, ECD centers, churches etc. The kit will have two main components templates and DVDs for the audience where there is no possibility to access DVD players etc will apply information provided on the templates. However, MHC, ECD centers, churches etc are places with possibility to use access Visual materials.

Issues of languages and culture have considered. Eg. Here in Tanzania we use Swahili as a media of communication and most of Tanzanian citizens communicate in Kiswahili. The kit may start to operate at the community with common languages, education levels and cultures and translated to various indigenous people languages in cooperation with indigenous people.
Regarding your idea I have been reading it repeatedly. I learn a lot and I promise you to provide my comments soon.

Hi, we really like your idea. Parenting kit is like a "warehouse" that can provide guideline about what children need and what parents should do in each stage of children's first five years. It is a creative way to use media like DVDs and printed templates to help parents. We think "TV programme" is also a good way to give parents guidelines. Maybe you can have a look at this research. https://openideo.com/challenge/zero-to-five/research/the-role-media-can-play-in-ensuring-children-thrive This research analyzed how their TV programme affects parents' decisions during their children development.

Furthermore, we think it may be better to provide some guideline about how to make some nutritive household food to their children in each stage. Nutrition is key in children's early year development. And children will feel parents' love when they have the food that parents prepared for them.

Hola Elimu,

Hi: this is very much what I would like to do in my region, Asia Pacific. so of course I love your idea :)

Of course, it is critical to follow scientifically validated milestones. Not sure if you need to calibrate guidelines to your area -something to check with experts.

The whole child development & growth process is long and related material - bulky. So the critical aspect of the project will be how structure the material and deliver it to parents and care givers (may not be exactly the same thing) so that they can easily absorb the idea and are hooked on it. The latter is the must if we want them to sustain monitoring children. I would think these will be critical success factors.

Consider OLPC to disseminate education to parents, low-cost laptops with game apps promoting nutrition education The cost of an OLPC - One-Laptop-Per Child is around US$100. As the child grows OLPC would be educational tool for the child creating marvelous unforeseen opportunities.

As I said I am initiating a project along those line in Asia Pacific, with extension to address problem of malnutrition of pregnant women and newborns. I am also interested in promoting a solution developed for one community to other communities and countries that can benefit from it.
Do you think these goals might be in sync what you have in mind?

I am happy to collaborate with you, it is really inspiring project, inspiring by the impact it may have on people live

cheers
Stan

Am interested in Knowing types Existing content or materials for parents in these low incomes setups you are casing .. What systems had been put in place to address such situations and how did it go? Allow me to put you to task - visit an "Early childhood policy centre" find out the challenges they faced in setting up or sustaining such interventions or why they have never thought of this then let me have this feedback. We are an NGO working with ECD programs for more than 17 years. Through our experiences we are aware of various challenges towards child upbringing at early years in low income communities. The biggest challenge persisting is lacking of parenting knowledge/skills and information on ECD matters. We are taking some interventions such as training ECD teachers/children caretakers, as well as collaborate with them to educate parents and child primary caregivers through forums include seminars, workshops and dialogues. Moreover send education text messages weekly to guide remind and seek feedback from parents and teachers on ECD matters. The idea we have are parents concerns as they need materials will help them to learn and interact with their children in daily bases. We think that the best materials to produce are DVD and leaflets ( please sdownload the template sample at your right side tabs

Hello Wekesa thank you for tasking me to find out ECD policy Issues.

Regarding your concern on Policy system at place, here in Tanzania we lack ECD policy. Though there is effort going on to develop Integrated ECD policy cut across inter-ministerial levels.
Challenges
1. Tanzania lacks ECD policy and there is no responsible ministry tasked to implement ECD programs.
2. Currently ECD programs are implemented at various ministries level so there is a big challenge to measure the implementation as each ministry has its own implementation focuses.
3. Thus currently ECD issues are implemented through other policy include Education policy focusing on per-primary education, Health policy focusing on Mother and Child Health MCH, Nutrition policy focusing on feeding, Child Development policy focusing on overall child development from 0-18 years.
