Fashion and breastfeeding - helping moms incorporate breastfeeding into their lifestyles

While breastfeeding is the best way to feed a baby, many women wonder what to wear when they are breastfeeding. In developing countries, women may associate breastfeeding with traditional clothing (and in some cultures, this meant very little clothing). They may wish to wear traditional clothing, or they may be looking for alternatives that allow them to breastfeed their infants, and dress in a less traditional style. I propose an international website where women can share fashions that work for breastfeeding, and includes links to sewing patterns, pictures of women wearing the fashion and breastfeeding, and role models from different cultures demonstrating fashion and breastfeeding.

A website is a good way to pull together information from all over the world. Fashion is a great way to draw women to the logistics of breastfeeding, and pictures help women visualize themselves breastfeeding. Links to breastfeeding information can help women engage with the idea and prepare to breastfeed before their babies are born.

Would love team members who have developed international websites, and those with an interest in clothing, photography, sewing, breastfeeding, babies and cultures around the world.

Who will benefit from this idea and where are they located?

The idea can be adapted for one or more cultures/regions or for the whole world. It would be interesting to see how ideas about clothing for the breastfeeding vary in different parts of the world.

How could you test this idea in a quick and low-cost way right now?

1. Set up a simple website in a country/region with relatively good access to the internet 2. Collaborate with an organization that promotes breastfeeding 3. Learn about ways the website is used - for example, women without internet access might have access to the website at a clinic.

What kind of help would you need to make your idea real?

Expert advice on implementing a website in a developing country, advice on cultural attitudes towards clothing and photos of women breastfeeding (some cultures aren't supportive of such photos).

Is this an idea that you or your organization would like to take forward?

  • This idea is meant to inspire. I hope someone else takes it on!
