What specific problem(s) are you trying to address? (300 character limit)

The project is designed to address issues of confidentiality, perceived judgmental attitude by adults, cost of services, inadequate personal touch/counselling & distance of services points which tends to create barriers for effective uptake of sexual & reproductive health services by young people.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the problem(s) you are working to address? (500 character limit)

In Nigeria, sex and related matters is still treated with some level of secrecy. Young people are generally not expected to openly discuss such matters. We are therefore still anxious at possible opposition from parents and other adults to their children/wards being involved in promoting sex related discussion & products. We are still working out how to compensate the X-corp members and provide internet data to them on a continuous basis.

Who are your end users? (1000 character limit)

The end users are the estimated 75,000 youths/adolescents between age 16 -24 years in the 19 higher institutions (universities, polytechnics & colleges of education), in Ogun State, Nigeria. We project to create about 300 Safex Clinics and train 600 youth peer providers (X-Corps). A typical client is an 18 years undergraduate by name Esther who saw a poster inviting her to join a WhatsApp group & enlisted. 3 days later Esther visited her boyfriend & engaged in unprotected sex. She was afraid of getting pregnant & contacted the X-Corp member in her group by name Doris privately through WhatsApp. ECP was recommended & provided for Esther that same night through another X-corp member, Jane living in the client hostel. Doris also advised Esther on STIs prevention, other forms of contraceptives & also gave her the address of the nearest physical clinic. Doris kept checking with Esther every week through private WhatsApp charts until Esther saw her next menstrual flow.

Explain your idea. (500 character limit)

Each Safex Clinic is a WhatsApp group of 256 people (with 2 of them trained providers referred to as X-Corps) linked to a physical youth friendly clinic. Using the WhatsApp, X-Corp members will share regular stories, micro-learning videos, E-flyers to promote sexual safety (prevention of STIs, unintended pregnancy & sexual assault) & also market condoms & ECPs while earning commission on products sold. Clients that requires professional attention will be referred to physical clinics.

What is your value proposition? (500 character limit)

End users of this initiative will be able to access SRH&R Services and products in a non-judgmental and convenient model through their peers

What's different about your idea compared to current solutions? (500 character limit)

Charting and sharing of information through WhatsApp is very popular among undergraduates and has been found to be the favorite social media among them. There is currently no such service utilizing this popular platform to provide ongoing SRHR services or products to them. The uniqueness of this initiative is its sustainability since clients will be charged fees & providers remunerated. SRHR services & products is brought closer to the potential beneficiaries with confidentiality enhanced.

What are the key reasons why end users would turn to your organization over another?

  • Convenience / Accessibility: Making products accessible

What would success look like for your end users? (500 character limit)

Services and products will be available to end users in their doorsteps and from providers they can trust using a platform that is popular with adolescents and youths. Once, this initiative is well established, students of tertiary institutions in Ogun State will be linked to virtual Safex Clinics where they can interact on sexual and reproductive health issues, obtain expert counselling and some SRHR products in the privacy of their rooms.

How would you measure the impact your idea has on your end user(s) ? How will you measure the success of your program? (500 character limit)

Impact will be measured using number of products taken up by end users through this initiative. Similarly, number of clients seen at the physical clinics will be collated on a monthly basis. In addition, we will on quarterly basis do an analysis of discussions on 10 randomly selected E-Safex Clinics

What strategies will/are you testing to acquire end users? (300 character limit)

We plan to use posters, flyers and recruitment drive by X-Corp members to promote this initiative. X-Corp compensation is dependent on recruitment of members to their WhatsApp platforms therefore they will actively go out to recruit members.

Key partnerships - Who will you partner with to make your idea work? (500 character limit)

We plan to partner with DKT Nigeria for the supply of contraceptive products (DKT has undertaken to provide female condoms free). We will also partner with the health centers in all the 13 participating institutions & train participants in these centers on the project concept. 1 3 other private or public health facility close to the institutions will be as enlisted partners to provide services at negotiated cost. The Sexual Safety Clinic of HOW Foundation will also provide physical services.

Thanks Mr Agaba for your interest in the E-Safex Clinc Project. Nominating the peers is still an issue we are still trying to full wrap our head around but for now now we are planning to advertise for interested students through posters, handbills etc and then carry out some form of interview/pre-selection process to identify those most suited for the project. As per motivation, they will earn commission on all products sold either directly or through referral and as you suggest there will be annual awards for best performing peers.
