EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

Somaapp is a mobile app that lists and matches East African students with thousands of domestic and international scholarships. Students enters their academic qualifications and SOMA fetches a personalized list of scholarships they qualify for. The problem SOMAAPP is a product designed to help students with the high cost of university education. The cost of college and university rise every year hence students and parents are forced to take out student loans to pay the tuition fees and other cost of living. This put many students in insurmountable debt but there is an alternative; FULLY FUNDED OPPORTUNITIES. The only problem is these opportunities are extremely hard to find, scattered over the Internet, this causes million dollars in free money to go to waste, as many students don't know this money exist. According to the survey carried out by the African economic outlook, 54% of respondents found a mismatch of skills between what job seekers have to offer and what employers require to be a major obstacle because university graduate are under educated due to poor quality education.

WHO BENEFITS?

We target youth (high school students, college and university students) from the last year of high school up to graduate students in universities who wish to embark in their next challenge. We especially hope to bring students from low income families into the platform, as we expect them to be the most untapped group that can bring a positive outcome to their countries of origin.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOU

I'm Isaya Yunge, founder and CEO at Somaapps Technologies Company Limited. I am an active mentor, Entrepreneur, unshakable optimist, Futurist, a visionary thinker with a rare intellect and I read One new book per week, currently reading Pitch Anything by Oren Klaff and it's top notch!

WHERE WILL YOUR IDEA BE IMPLEMENTED?

  • Kenya
  • Rwanda
  • Tanzania
  • Uganda

EXPERIENCE IN IMPLEMENTATION COUNTRY(IES)

  • Yes, for more than one year.

EXPERTISE IN SECTOR

  • I’ve worked in a sector related to my idea for over a year

HOW HAS YOUR IDEA CHANGED BECAUSE OF BENEFICIARY FEEDBACK?

When testing the beta version of Somaapp, we found that complicated procedures on using mobile app were a large obstacle. In developing Somaapp we designed and develop a beta version in simplicity and incorporated users suggestions, where young people and students could access these opportunities in two simple steps, to ensure that our service was truly interactive and responding to users demands. One more noticeable change is that users have indicated willingness and consent to pay for additional opportunities in a weekly or monthly basis.

HOW IS YOUR IDEA UNIQUE?

There are currently no other services similar to Somaapp in East Africa region, using a peer-to-peer mobile app platform, More importantly many of these platform are on the website platform where they are scammed, making these information scattered. Most potential competitors operate in only one country and are based on an ‘Paid App Model’ rather than crowdsourcing or as we call it ‘AppSourcing’ - a model that Somaapp feels is ultimately un-scalable and unsustainable for the nature of African millennial and poverty factor. We believe that by unlocking the power of sharing equal opportunities and sharing of information young people can improve their skills and potential. Today at least one member in every household in Tanzania and Africa uses smartphones, hence we can reach more people with solutions right in their hands, students can use their parent’s smartphones to access these opportunities and apply. An app to make helping people a lot easier, sharing opportunities to enhance quality education is why I strongly believe this is the unique advantage that I have.

WHY DO YOU THINK THAT THE PROBLEM YOUR IDEA SOLVES FOR HAS NOT BEEN SOLVED?

The followings statistics and findings approve the notion that the problem has not been solved and it keeps on growing; By 2030 Africa will be short of 2.1m teachers and 39 million primary school children in Africa have no access to education. Under-qualified teachers are also struggling with large class sizes. The mismatch between local opportunities and relevance of education and skills training.
A majority of young people across the region recognized the mismatch between the skills gained from formal education and those needed to find work. That is why education cannot wait the fund for education crisis, If we can use mobile phone right, young people can be a force for good

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR UNANSWERED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS IDEA?

- How do we identify value propositions that our users will pay for? -How do we determine pricing? -How can we scale the idea throughout African countries? -How can we know if this has a chance to become a sustainable business, which is effective and efficient considering the rapid change of technology innovation?

IS THIS IDEA NEW FOR YOU OR YOUR ORGANIZATION?

I have been working on this idea since 2014 while at the university, and February 2016 I built a team to make it more sustainable. It’s a new idea, Prior to how we are implementing it now- we were using whatsApp to share these opportunities and we saw a problem in a national scale, and our solution was working hence we decided to implement it more proper and with a business perspective.

WHO WILL IMPLEMENT THIS IDEA?

We have a team of 5 people across different expertise to help grow Somaapp to make sure that our product is the best it can be, and that it help as many young people as possible. Our teams also build partnerships with other startup, innovation hubs and incubation centers in Dar es Salaam where we continue to learn and grow. To facilitate growth and help millions of young people reach the dreams Somaapps Technologies Company Limited will pioneer this product under my leadership.

We are a startup and we are growing, developing over 10 products that are yet to enter into market and somaapp is a products that  define what we believe and hopes to accomplish, we aspire to create solutions for our community, as we believe strongly that we know what young people are going through, we have been there, we are there, but we won't stay there forever because we are creating the tools that we need, the tools that will give us all power in our hands, the tools that are powered by our smartphones.

SHARE ONE SENTENCE ABOUT THE IMPACT YOU WOULD LIKE THIS PROJECT TO HAVE FIVE YEARS FROM NOW, AND ONE QUESTION YOU NEED TO ANSWER TO GET THERE.

To see everyone, from each low-income household in East Africa at-least two children from each family are able to afford access to a quality education, regardless of who they are, where they’re from, or what they have. Qn: How many young people who are currently ( at year 2016/2017) are graduating from college, are supposed to attend university, and what's their gender proportionate?

MY ORGANIZATION'S OPERATING BUDGET FOR 2015 WAS:

  • Under $100,000

MY INTENDED BENEFICIARIES ARE:

  • More than 500 km from where our team does most of its work

HOW LONG HAVE YOU AND YOUR COLLEAGUES BEEN WORKING ON THIS PILOT PROJECT TOGETHER?

  • More than a year

WHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN JOINING AMPLIFY'S PORTFOLIO OF INNOVATORS?

There’s no better quote out there than "knowledge is power." It’s short, simple, and if you take the time to (mindfully) dissect it, you’ll start finding out how true it is. To have a keen understanding of what’s going on within my industry and the best practices surrounding it, for me joining AMPLIFY'S INNOVATORS is a dream come true.

I almost forgot, there is no any payment method integrated within the app and as i remember during your presentation people showed readiness to pay for the app if the value it provides is wort it, I personally think the value content wise is great in your app so far. Are you guys going to integrate payment model like mobile money or it will be totally free for now? Are going to pay one time or on regular basis?

Many students in Africa fails to join better higher learning institutions because they are unaware of the scholarships available to many collages and sometimes these scholarships found on the internet are directed to spam websites.Through soma app many students will be able to seek valid scholarships thus preventing the wastage of time in choosing valid scholarship opportunities from invalid ones.I would like to recommend students across east Africa to try this app.Soma app is the game changer in educational industry

Hi James Alute It is so great reading your feedback and observations on the problem we are solving. It's so true that more than 3 billion USD money for scholaships, interns, workshops, confrences, vocational trainings goes un-claimed every year simply because the majority of youth does not know if this money exists.

We appreciate that you wish to recommend the app to young people, please do share the news in your community with loved ones, families, friends this way we will reach as many young people and impact their lives just by sharing the information.

Hi Isaya and Team! Amplify and our experts have some comments and questions for you - we encourage you to think about this feedback as you continue to improve and refine your idea.

We appreciate how this idea has clearly gone through some in depth usability testing and user design. The next step is stakeholder mapping - how can you bring in different kinds of users into the system and how would different profiles interact with it.

A possible challenge may be finding/vetting/ and consistently updating the platform with new opportunities. Perhaps the platform would be better suited to opening it up on the backend for opportunity providers to list their own jobs/opportunities. If you could find the right pricing model, both for users to access the system, and potential scholarship providers to list their opportunities, I think you could find a sustainability model that would work.

Questions:
We’d like to learn a bit more about the pricing - do people make one off payments when they need to use the service? Is there an alternative consideration of trying to get people to directly advertise on the site?

Also, it would be great to have more information on the long-term sustainability of this idea. It’d be great to learn more about how seekers and providers will be drawn to the platform and how they can be convinced to stick around.

In case you missed it, OpenIDEO and Amplify hosted a Storytelling Office Hour - https://youtu.be/g0gZRR6T9tA. Storytelling is an incredibly useful tool to articulate an idea and help make it come to life! Don't forget - December 18th is your last day to make changes to your idea on the OpenIDEO platform.

Looking forward to reading more!

Hi Chelsea Takamine  and Amplify Team! Thank you for your comments and questions more importantly for this wonderful opportunity that has exposed me and my team to human-centered design approach and the process has been a wonderful enriching experience for us.

The following are the answers to some of the points you have highlighted and Answers to the questions you've asked;

OBSERVATION 1: The next step is stakeholder mapping - how can you bring in different kinds of users into the system and how would different profiles interact with it.

OBSERVATION 1 ANSWER:
We have been through a keen process of identifying different users and stakeholders. Our strategy in bringing many stakeholders to the platform is through partnerships with other organisations those that can add value to the platform and those that can use the platform to reach many users with their opportunities. We have already started official talks with embassies in Tanzania such as the embassy of Japan, USA, China, India, British Counsel and both have agreed to use the app to post their different opportunities for Tanzania young people, as we scale we intend to partner with embassies in different countries where we plan to scale our platform within the east Africa region. Also, we are partnering with the ministry of education, ministry of foreign affairs, Universities, Students governments, Village Committee, Churches and Mosque youth groups, Youth Organization such as YUNA, AISEEC, and other local youth organizations in an agreement of using their platform to bring more users to the platform through multiple campaigns.

Two types of users will be drawn to the platform these are Beneficiaries and Opportunity providers, beneficiaries will use the app to access and apply for opportunities while opportunity providers will use the platform to list new opportunities and conduct special trainings on how to apply and win these opportunities.

QUESTION 1: We’d like to learn a bit more about the pricing - do people make one off payments when they need to use the service?

ANSWER 1:
Our pricing model is unique, we have individual packages for users to pay via mobile money and also we have bulk payment model where by school, organization such as municipality, churches, NGO’s can buy bulk access code for as many young people in a certain area.

To answer the question, There is going to be one off payments – this is going to be an annual subscription. Our model is a fremium one, whereby there users can access a limited number of opportunities but to unlock the unlimited package of opportunities they will be required to pay a one-time subscription fee annually which will not be more than $1.

Spam
Photo of Isaya Yunge
Team

QUESTION 2: Is there an alternative consideration of trying to get people to directly advertise on the site?

QUESTION 2 ANSWERS:
Yes, our strategy is in three phases, our first phase is user acquisition and our projection is to attract 1 million downloads and at least 600,000 – 800,000 active users monthly. Then after building a strong user base we will launch an active uniquely designed Ads channel targeting local advertisers who want to reach our audiences. This will be our second income generation activity within the platform. Such advertisers are private school, books stores, fashion stores, corporates, brands, national agencies and individuals.

Furthermore, we are considering of integrating Google Ads/Admob in our platform we are still working on a way to present the Ads without annoying users. After we receive analytics of what works within the platform, which value is more likely used more than the other, and we are still innovating best ways to present the service with Ads integrated in a most authentic and unique ways especially allowing users after paying for the annual subscription to turn off the Ads.

QUESTION 3: Also, it would be great to have more information on the long-term sustainability of this idea. It’d be great to learn more about how seekers and providers will be drawn to the platform and how they can be convinced to stick around.

QUESTION 3 ANSWERED:
The following statics is vital to point out as we discuss about long-term sustainability of the platform.

There are 15.5 million youth in Tanzania aged between 15-35 which is 34.7% of total population; and the formal sector can only employ not more than 1% of youth aged 15-24.

Only 360,000 employment opportunities are created every year, while over 800,000 young graduates and those migrated from rural areas to urban areas enter the labour market in Tanzania every year.

Wha does this mean? It simply means majority of young people population remains unemployed.

Why unemployed? Because of poor quality education that they continue to receive in the African settings of secondary and higher learning institutions, this causes young people to be unskilled, un-qualified for many jobs even with their education in fact According to the survey carried out by the African economic outlook, 54% of respondents found a mismatch of skills between what job seekers have to offer and what employers require to be a major obstacle.

These statistics provides us with a positive projections on the long-term sustainability because the demand for opportunity is massive, young people need to get exposed to world class education, trainings, workshops and internships opportunities so that they learn by doing, adopt standards, transfer technological and knowledge that African countries need especially now that the continents witnesses rapid economic, technological and social development.
The platform also will allow multiple sources of opportunity to list directly to the provider portal integrated on the backend of the platform; this will insure sustainability of opportunities availability timely and accurately presented.

We intend to use multiple campaigns, advertisement strategies to attract seekers to the platform. Our most strong approach is partnering with students organizations in each high school, and university through an endorsement from the ministry of education, ministry of youth and through this campaign we intend to enter into partnership agreement with students government leaders to become our ambassadors to their schools and universities, I myself graduated last year I was a Prime Minister of the Student organization at the Institute of finance management, and as student government leader we have power to endorse, and influence students to take party in different initiative and through this experience I know this is the cheapest and quickest way to keep new seekers keep coming to the platform as we build long term relations with universities and High schools as well as other youth organizations in the region. Moreover, we are open for new approach and ideas so as we continue implementing we will iterate, test strategies, and be flexible to improvements and innovations as we receive beneficiary feedback on regular basis.

Also the use of impact and successful testimonies stories of students that we have helped to encourage and inspire other young people to use the platform.

Finally, we are planning to seek partnerships with parents associations and teachers associations, as the platform helps parents too when their children get the opportunities they are looking for.

QUESTION 3 ANSWER CONTINUED:

How can they be convinced to stick around? By offering personalized list of opportunities based on their academic qualifications, by notifying them of new opportunities as when new opportunities are available or on deadlines to apply and by supporting them during the application process – our team will be consulting applicants with tips and advice on how to apply and win the opportunities as we know one challenge is these young people are not confident enough to apply for this opportunities.

The use of mobile phone as a delivery tools ensures our sustainability and these can be backed by the following statistics for East Africa by GSMA 2016

-By 2020, there will be 720m smartphones. Growth of 494m from the end of 2015.

Mobile contribution to economic and social development

-Delivering digital inclusion to the still unconnected populations mobile Internet penetration; 2015 = 25%, 2020 = 41%.

-Delivering innovative new services and apps. Number of M2M connections to reach 36m by 2020.

Employment

Jobs directly supported by mobile ecosystem in 2015 is 1.3m, Plus an additional 2.4m indirect job supported in 2015.

Source: GSMA 2016

Youth across East Africa want to start and grow businesses, secure employment, learn and apply new skills, contribute to their families and communities, and participate in the decisions that affect their lives. They face low levels of education and luck- appropriate skills, precarious and informal work, and social exclusion.
That is why education cannot wait the fund for education crisis, while every year almost USD 3 billion goes un-claimed because parents and youth don't know if they exist.

Somaapp aligns with the United Nations’ 2015 Sustainable Development Goals to achieve gender equality and provide quality education.

In order to achieve full and equal access to quality education and participation in economic growth, and to further achieve gender equality and girls’ empowerment, there need to be greater opportunities made available to young people especially girls and an increase in investments around young peoples employability skills education.

That’s where Somaapp comes in.

Hi Valeryia! Thank you for spending your precious time and share you feedback with us. We are certainly convinced that sharing these opportunity using mobile application will have a lot more impact, today in East Africa at least one member of a household in East Africa uses a smartphone. But still young people lack information on opportunities and on educational on how to use these smartphones to improve their skills or access opportunities, that's why we are creating Somaapp, to give young people power in their hands to change their lives and become active global citizens creating a better world for all. This way we will empower girls in refugee camps, girls and young people from low-income families who are extremely talented by cannot access opportunities to unlock their potentials because most of them don't know if these opportunities even exist.

Please, share your ideas on how to improve the idea and spread the word to friends and families.

Please, share your ideas on how we can develop more to fit your needs and we will be happy to work on them.

Hi Jason, thanks for your comment and sharing with us a great idea on how to expand the value proposition. Yes, we have considered vocational training too, what we are working on now is to gather enough data on available vocational trainings that young people in East Africa are eligible to apply and attend. Please, if you know any of these opportunities or have any other ideas that you think might be a great fit into this whole idea your always welcome to share with us. Thank you!

If you are interested in opportunities in Mwanza region, northern Tanzania. we can put you in touch with tanzaniaruralhealth.org -- they are always looking for new participants and opportunities. If you are interested in opportunities elsewhere, we could assist local organizations to develop their own services and recruit local youth as responders.

Please check out the User Experience Map on our profile page and let us know if you think something like that could work with you. If so, how? Or how could we improve it to fit your needs? You can see the map here: https://challenges.openideo.com/challenge/youth-empowerment-challenge/ideas/911-where-there-is-none-community-based-emergency-medical-systems-development-in-mwanza-tanzania

Look forward to hearing your feedback!

Hi Isaya,

Sounds like a great idea. Please take a look at my idea, do you think we could work out something to integrate both of our ideas.

Thanks, Romano.

Hi Romano,

Thanks for reaching out, went through your idea and it sounds great and we think we could use the somaapp platform to inform many young people so they participate on the summit. would like to hear from you too on what do you have in mind on how we could collaborate, just to let you know we have been doing research and collecting data on the idea and we have passed idea phase - we are actually fixing few bugs to publish the app for everyone in East Africa.

Looking forward to hear from you!
