VSO Through the office of the policy and advocacy Africa -which works closely with the African Union (AU)-has committed to take up KSL as a policy issue. This means that means - They will support the Deaf team for their voices to be heard in various policy forums this year.

2017 is a great policy year for Africa, there are 4 policy processes taking place this year, the Childrens' Act, The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) review, Human Rights Action plan and the African Union Strategy on realizing Demographic Dividend. Every Year 40 countries report on the SDGs progress, this is a high level political forum where Cabinet secretaries from the countries are expected to report the status of the SDGs in their various countries. This year in New York, Kenya Mwangi Kiunjuri  will be reporting on behalf of Kenya and VSO is giving Deaf people to voice their priortity aims of adopting Kenyan Sign Language as a compulsory subject in Primary and secondary schools.

This year AU summit will be held in Ethiopia from 22nd January where one of our representatives Peninah will be speaking on behalf of all Deaf youth and asking 54 countries to make Sign Language a compulsory subject. Later in the year, possibly participate in development of AU Human rights in July.

Happy to receive the email from @Luisa Covaria and @Scott Shigeoka if interested in helping OpenIDEO launch challenges related to inclusion, YES WE ARE!and part of our Impact story shared in a video by Dorcas Imerina  The Kenya Sign Language Club -we are happy to participate in making FIRST the ideo platform to be inclusive and specifically Deaf Friendly! Our first tip is to ensure all video done by IDEO and all applicants have subtitles! That way-we access information as Deaf people. @Mpindi Abaas was our Hero as he redid the impact video to be Deaf Friendly
