Using ICT solutions to match young agricultural entrepreneurs with the skills, knowledge and finance that they need to grow their businesses
EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA
Currently, young people lack the skills and knowledge necessary to build successful livelihoods in the agricultural sector. Self Help Africa will develop an ICT platform that will provide young farmers and aspiring agricultural entrepreneurs (agripreneurs) with tailored information and services to help them develop their businesses.
Young people will register their profiles on the platform, indicating their specific areas of interest, the type of crops they're working with, the markets they're interested in and their training and business needs. We will then use these profiles to develop tailored training modules that will be delivered to young farmers by community-based trainers. These training modules will address subjects such as good agricultural practices, farming as a business, product quality, aggregation and accessing markets. It will also include training on life skills, including communication, negotiation, decision-making, self-awareness and problem-solving.
A text-message based system that will be free to its users, our platform will deliver information on agricultural techniques, and on market conditions. Young agripreneurs will also be able to use the platform to connect with financial institutions and business service providers, as well as access information about the credit options available to them.
Our approach will support young men and women between the ages of 18 and 35 who have started work in the agricultural sector but who require support to help them generate profit through their enterprises. It will also support young people who are interested in gaining a foothold in farming, but who don’t know where to start to begin their entrepreneurial journey.
