Promoting skills training through the informal sector
The idea here is to offer thousands of youth opportunities to access quick impact skills training and income opportunities as apprentices.
EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA
Unemployment among the youth including street children in Kenya is a major problem and a ticking time bomb as their population continues to escalate. Many cannot access skills training because of the competitive nature of selecting trainees in formal institutions. The idea of formal institutions insisting on minimum entry requirements to pursue a given skill area has a limiting factor in that it excludes candidates who fail to meet the grades, a discriminative method that contributes to unemployment. The net effect is that those who are left out end up frustrated compelling them to engage in criminal activities. Yet affordable means of training lies in job or informal training, an approach that is not so popular in a nation where certification is emphasized. The solution for addressing this problem lies in offering skills through informal training namely apprenticeship to those disadvantaged by lack of requisite entry point grades.
The advantage of informal training approach is that it has a business orientation as it offers learners’ opportunities to acquire hands on business skills apart from receiving specialized skills in their respective area of interest. Another advantage is that it enables thousands of youth from poor backgounds to access skills easily, it is affordable, it is inclusive, it is business oriented, it's replicable, it offers hands on experience to learners, it is innovative and broad based, it has quick impact, it is gender friendly, it is measurable
This project targets 10,000 youth unable to access skills training due to their inability to gain entry into formal training institutions because they lack the required grades.
