Food loss is a major problem in Africa, with fresh food spoiled ‘post-harvest to market’ time frame. Vegetables require a cool constant temperature where humidity is controlled in order to maintain freshness, nutritional value, and maximum shelf life. The lack of economic resources in much of Africa, puts these attributes in jeopardy since in many areas electrical power is either unavailable, unreliable, or too costly to use.
This has inspired the GO-DECK team to develop a no power fridge. This fridge, made locally from landfill-bound materials, will reduce temperature during storage and transport, while also regulating humidity.GO-DECK uses water instead of electricity to cool vegetables. Repeated trials show a 20 degree reduction in temperature in 60 minutes after a two liter water charge. We have produced a 100% working model made of recycled materials that is fully ready for field deployment. We calculate that this design has the potential to save millions of metric tons in food loss per year done for a negligible cost. “Together we intend to dramatically reduce food loss while being pioneers for the next green revolution.”
We would like to roll this out in Tanzania (where we have one of our team member lives) and then reach millions of people through out Africa. Every household will benefit from this benefiting a generation of people who do not have daily nutrient food.
