EXPLAIN YOUR IDEA

Our idea is to develop a post harvest training center for youth in agriculture. The youth will not be interested in investing in agriculture if they will be making severe losses due to post-harvest challenges as is the case with many farmers. Training them in ways, skills and practices of good handling of agricultural produce to reduce losses along the value chain will help the youth manage their produce better and spot other opportunities to grab in order to obtain substantial income to keep them in agriculture. This centre will be a practical / hands on training center for the youth. Where they will be practically trained to obtain skills as well as knowledge of handling produce along the value chain. The skills will include production, entrepreneur, financial and management. At the center there will be structures, machines, equipment and crops required for youth to work with during the training. The center will demonstrate appropriate technologies, tools and services in marketing and postharvest handling. This can further un veil opportunities for the youth in fabrication, processing and other value addition activities. We will bring various stakeholders on board, but the financial institutions will be key to help start a loaning scheme for the trained youth. Those that spot an opportunity or pick on a technology and require capital to implement; will be recommended to the lending institution to acquired start up loan. Proper payback procedures will be put in place.

WHO BENEFITS?

1. The youth in agriculture They will gain skills and knowledge to foster what they are already doing in agriculture 2. Graduate unemployed youth These will obtain skills and will be assisted to spot and take opportunities in the agricultural value chain 3. Small holder farmers The trained youth will offer skills and services to these farmers.

Wow! That's a great idea. As youths are interested in joining agricultuture but we are held back by low returns and high levels of spoilage of agricultural produce. We also welcome ideas and training on value addition and prolonging the shelf life especially for the perishables. Thanks
